Default 458 Challenge on Track With GT2RS

Don't see this at a DE everday! A lovely 458 Challenge (yes) car as seen from my 2RS. Neither one of us were very fast in relation to car's capabilities but look at the rear view...crazy. Laguna Seca YourPrivateTrackday.com event which was a lot of fun and our "Advanced" group were good, safe drivers. A very fun day.

Remember to post some driving impressions when you get a minute. Disregard if you posted elsewhere; I've been away and maybe I missed them.

It is freaking fast. Ludicrous fast. And very neutral 100% stock. Aside from minding my tire pressures, I haven't changed anything and I find it to be quite neutral entering and exiting the tighest of corners. The throttle inputs of course must be respected, but after I got used to it a bit it was not scary.

The big problem at this track was dropping down into T1 and T2 because warp 10 down the straight puts you up the *** of a car that seconds ago was 20 car lengths ahead of you. Braking zones require recalibration as well as you might expect.

You can see in the video above I totally had to back out of it in T1. This was a mandatory point-by host for all sessions so I didn't have the luxury of passing as soon as I caught the car ahead.

For me the bottom line is the 2RS is the crack cocaine of track cars. I think anybody that tracked one would fall in love.

I was told the Challenge is 600lbs lighter than a stock 458. All glass was paper thin lexan, doors were carbon, etc etc. Lovely car, just lovely. They run ceramic rotors too!

The sound of that 458 has to be heard to be believed. I don't like the sound of the 458 much at all -- it's horribly contrived and synthetic ... like the old Maxima engine in a Nissan 350Zzz made to sound like it has a crackling performance tune when it's all in the can. But the 458 GT or Challenge or whatever that was ... just astonishing ... a pure race engine noise that made you just follow along behind just to listen to it. And that thing could move -- the driver was just "point and squirt" but when he gave it a boot full, it was as if I had missed a shift (I was in a 3.8 RS and not sparing the whip.) When the Challenge race comes to Sears or Laguna, I imagine the front runners will put down some "WTF?!" times.

Pete,

Great to finally meet you in person yesterday. Sorry my timing was bad, as we didn't get much time to talk. And I'm really, REALLY pissed that I forgot to bring my helmet! I'm kicking myself that I didn't get a ride in that beautiful beast. Say, what happened to Adam in his white RS? Your video shows him in quite a tank slapper out of T2. Sure hope he didn't collect anything before it came to a stop.
