There have been more 997.2 GT3 RS sold already (426) than the 997.1 GT3 RS (413 total).
I remember folks here (and a local Porsche dealer in PA) in 2007 insisting up and down that there would be no 2008 GT3 RS.

What were their historical volumes for 911s? In the 70s and 80s?
If selling SUVs/sedans to badge snobs keeps them in the business of making 911s and some other sports cars then life is good.

“As we’ve seen throughout the last six months of 2010, consumers in December clearly felt more confident about the future and showed it in their purchases.” said Jim O’Donnell, President and CEO of BMW of North America, LLC.
We really like the momentum we’re getting as a result of this and along with our continual aggressive new model launches from BMW and MINI in 2011 we have real optimism we will continue growing our business with profitable sales in the new year.”

Keep in mind that first Porsche is still building these cars and 2011 RS allocations far out number GT3 allocations. When you look at the numbers, remember that the GT3 has been in production for over 18 months. The RS isn't even up to its first full year. VW ownership probably has a lot to do with the numbers as there is more focus on the bottom line. As a simple fact, Porsche makes more money selling an RS than a GT3...even more if you check the "no-cost delete" options. They are just selling what they make more money on. The real question is, will RS production this time surpass GT3 production?

I think the 911 model production peaked around 2005/2006. At the same time the SUV sales was starting, and since 2009 sedans. Going forward SUV/sedan sales will continue to grow and sports cars will decline. The era of Porsche as a sole sports car maker is history.
