Wow the ratio of RS sale to GT3 in 2010 is 3/1...amazing and explains the quick depreciation.

There have been more 997.2 GT3 RS sold already (426) than the 997.1 GT3 RS (413 total).

I remember folks here (and a local Porsche dealer in PA) in 2007 insisting up and down that there would be no 2008 GT3 RS.

Is it 3/1? From the tables above 206 GT3s were sold in 2010 vs 426 RS and I suspect the GT3s sold in '09 on that table were '10s. I see 566 GT3s vs 426 RS.

Thanks, and ouch!
Sounds like it won't take many Cayman Rs to supply 'demand'.

It's clear that PAG will become more like BMW/MB. Manufacturer of sedans/SUVs and a few sports cars on the side. A role reversing, in tune with its new customer base.

Very well put and discouraging news for the purist or Porsche hardcore fan...

What were their historical volumes for 911s? In the 70s and 80s?

If selling SUVs/sedans to badge snobs keeps them in the business of making 911s and some other sports cars then life is good.

Press Release: The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported December sales of 27,600 vehicles, an increase of 16.9 percent from the 23,617 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. For 2010, the BMW Group in the U.S. reported total sales of 265,757 vehicles, up 9.9 percent compared to the 241,727 vehicles sold in 2009.

“As we’ve seen throughout the last six months of 2010, consumers in December clearly felt more confident about the future and showed it in their purchases.” said Jim O’Donnell, President and CEO of BMW of North America, LLC.

We really like the momentum we’re getting as a result of this and along with our continual aggressive new model launches from BMW and MINI in 2011 we have real optimism we will continue growing our business with profitable sales in the new year.”

Keep in mind that first Porsche is still building these cars and 2011 RS allocations far out number GT3 allocations. When you look at the numbers, remember that the GT3 has been in production for over 18 months. The RS isn't even up to its first full year. VW ownership probably has a lot to do with the numbers as there is more focus on the bottom line. As a simple fact, Porsche makes more money selling an RS than a GT3...even more if you check the "no-cost delete" options. They are just selling what they make more money on. The real question is, will RS production this time surpass GT3 production?

I think the 911 model production peaked around 2005/2006. At the same time the SUV sales was starting, and since 2009 sedans. Going forward SUV/sedan sales will continue to grow and sports cars will decline. The era of Porsche as a sole sports car maker is history.
