I made an interesting discovery today. Being a nut for preventative maintenance I went to an indy shop to get my oil changed. 5,000 KMs - about 3,100 miles on a new car with 6 track days.
Years ago I read that the 996 Cup wanted the tranny oil changed every ten hours. I've been doing that ever since.
For the GT cars and Turbos, Porsche wants us to use Mobil PTX apparently formulated specifically for our cars and available only from dealers. Comes in 20 liter containers and costs (gasp) 840 bucks in Canada.
Here's the interesting part. A large dealer who has sold a lot of GT3s did not have it.
The same dealer sold us Mobil 1 LS Gear oil.
When we drained the gear case oil, it was obvious that there was more than just oil. It felt like there was moly added. Those with rifle experience will remember "Dri-Slide".
So .... does this mean that dealers have not been filling our gearboxes and trans axles with the right oil? I don't know but I've ordered PTX.
I have read elsewhere that Mobil 1 Delvac 75-90 is also a good fill for our cars. I don't know where to find it locally.
So, a heads-up to everyone with a GT2, GT3 or Turbo. Essentially all the GT1 based engined cars.
Best,

You should be able to get Delvac through the parts department of most truck dealerships such as Freightliner or Kenworth. It's usually significantly cheaper than auto parts retailers and will save you shipping.
When I inquired about PTX from our local Porsche dealer, they said they didn't have it either which makes me wonder what they put in GT3's...

I read about that, but when I called around for the truck shops around here, I was told that they don't carry the Delvac.. they carry different brands, etc. I even called the transmission shops, etc.
So I just paid a little bit more and order from Lufteknic..

I have used the Delvac in my cup car diffs for some years with good results. Also have had good results in a non-P car we race in Grand AM,
Speaking of RS transmissions, should I expect much noise at idle with trans in neutral and clutch disengaged? It is normal in cup cars with straight cut gears (997) but I am surprised at the street car.
Noise disappears if the clutch is depressed.
thoughts?

RS lightweight single mass flywheel is noisy when disengaged. Clutch in and the noise goes away.

It's the LFWF-induced geartrain chatter. Search and you'd find plenty of reference.
That said, the amount of rattle varies from car to car. Mine used to rattle less than comparably-run 997.1 RS' but after recent transmission problems and a gearbox rebuild it's become more pronounced. So in a way it can be an indication of your mechanical tolerances inside the box. Louder certainly ain't better...

Bob,
Delvac is available in Ottawa. I'm in the middle of attempting to source some. Talk to Matt at GT gears (Guard) and he recommends Delvac or Lubrication Engineers out of Texas. Because of the Hazmat issues, getting oils over the border isn't always fun.
