That 997.2 GT2RS that just sold on PCAR may be the very first example I've ever seen that sold for under MSRP. It was just up my alley too as I prefer to buy higher mileage drivers, but alas I am not in the market nor have the required funds at my disposal. Super impressive buy in my opinion though.

I'm watching the 997.1 GT2 on BaT intently and still think it's going to sell for $165k+. Let's see what happens though, but the low mileage cars do always get sold for a premium...and may be largely Covid-19 resistant. We will find out soon!

I never quite understood the historically massively huge market value differential between the GT2 and GT2RS. The biggest plus the RS has is the 500 unit limited edition number plate, but that’s in comparison to only 1,200 units without the number plates.

Mechanically, it’s basically the same car. Very minor changes. I like the bigger intercoolers and the hotter tune, the carbon hood is a little lighter, and less push with slightly wider front tires. The centerlocks I can do without, so IMHO the regular GT2 is better in that regard. Again, not much of a difference mechanically.

So, how much more value should the number plate add? A good comparison might be to look at the 1st gen NSX and compare that to the special edition Zanardi 1st gen NSX. The Zanardi had a special paint color and a more track-oriented suspension (just stiffer springs if I recall correctly), and of course the limited edition number plate, so similarly minor mechanical differences.

The last one sold on BaT for $135k:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1999-acura-nsx-12/

Perhaps the best comparison they have of a similar mile non-Zanardi car might be this one that sold for $57,500:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2000-acura-nsx-7/

So, the Zanardi sold for 2.35x what the non-Zanadri went for. Wow! But remember they only made 51 of them vs. reportedly 18,685 total 1st gen cars. That means the Zanardi represented just 0.27% of total production.

The GT2RS on the other hand, even at only 500 units made, represents a whopping 29% of total production, so really no way it should fetch anywhere near a premium as a Zanardi over a regular NSX, despite it having been doing exactly that historically.

I think if GT2RS values are heading downward now, it can be best described as a long awaited “correction” relative to the regular GT2.

Is that recent PCAR sale just an anomaly? I think perhaps not. Let’s not forget the last GT2RS that went up for auction previously only got bid up to $249:

Very nice synopsis @mchrono and I do agree with your points. I enjoy you used the NSX as a car of comparison as I love them too, but you're right that the production numbers of non Zanardi and Zanardi cars are pretty far apart.

A better overall comparison might be a 1998 or 1999 NA2 Coupe versus a Zanardi, as those are mechanically as similar as possible and compare numbered versus non numbered examples. Funny enough though that there may be fewer of the 98/99 NA2 Coupes than actual Zanardi editions!

2rs traded below MSRP for quite a while shortly after they were first released. They were the LAST 997 GT to catch a bid but once they did, they RIPPED faster than any of them. While the engine might not be materially different than the regular 2, the chassis behavior is SIGNIFICANTLY different than the 2. I don’t own either anymore and don’t have a strong opinion or care about where value should be between the two, but man, I don’t buy at all that they are virtually the same car. I think they drove MATERIALLY differently.

I disagree, the suspension was virtually identical as was set up and the actual weight difference of customer specced cars was less than the weight of a passenger.

The main difference is that people are collecting the RS not driving it so they are 90% very low mile garage queens. Having said that those are ridiculously low mile GT2s in the ads above, FFS people, drive these cars they are not meant to sit around

RS is RS.
One and only manual GT2 RS.

This just in from classic.com:
[May] was a significant month for the classic car market as traditional "physical" auctions started to ramp up their online offerings. We saw a total of $55.3m in sales*, down from $97.2m in May 2019, which is down 43% comparatively, but it’s an impressive feat given that all last month's sales happened entirely online!

Needless to say, Bring a Trailer kept humming along with impressive results and no sign of a price correction for individual models. Quite the opposite in fact... more eyeballs on each auction seems to be lifting the market. Barrett Jackson did not disappoint with its online-only sale and RM Sotheby’s came through with a very impressive lineup for its online-only sale as well.
I don’t believe there has been a published GT2 sale since January at $181,888 all in with buyer’s premium, so all eyes now on the current BaT listing currently at $150 ($155 w/ premium) with 2 days left to go:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...he-911-gt2-10/

From my casual review, this car appears fairly clean save for a missing stock exhaust and water lines never having been done. With online auctions being the way things are being done these days, this ought to give us a solid read on the current state of the GT2 market and I think settle the debate of GT2 vs GT2RS value differential.

We will know in 2 days!

Today is the BIG day for this particular GT2 and I do suspect $165k (before fees) might take it, but I also think that could be a good solid buy. The BaT predictive indicator tool is saying about $166k at this point in time too (but it will continue to update as more bids come in).

I see 10 cars publicly listed for sale right now on the interwebs aside from the BAT car (and a Rennlist member in a different thread indicated he'd sell as well, which is a different car from any of the below). Range in price from $165k-$200k.

Clearly at least one person out there thinks my $136k (50% of the GT2 RS) was too low, as bidding jumped from $136k straight to $150k. As a non-GT2 owner, but hopeful one, I'd been delighted if I was closer to being right.

I’d sell my 17k mile example for $7,500 less than whatever this auction generates, gross of fees. A little bit of a reverse wager I guess!
