Default MK2 GT3 vs RS weight....Hmmm

This hit me this morning. Is the RS really any lighter than the regular GT3? There are several things on the new RS that add weight and a couple that take weight away. Here is what I mean:

Weight Adders:

- Wider front wheels
- Wider front tires
- Fender Flares

I am guessing that all together these added about 22 lbs....about the same as the LI battery saves.

- Wider rear fenders
- Wider rear tires
- Larger rear decklid and wing

I am guessing that these add 15-20 lbs...about the same as the TI exhaust takes away. If this is true, where is the real weight savings?

Weight Reducers:

- LI Battery
- Titanium exhaust
- Sport Buckets

Remember the regular GT3 already has a lighter engine lid, trunk lid and doors. There are no ligther panels on the new RS. It does not even get a lighter rear window like the previous model. The RS comes with Sport Buckets standard. The GT3 does not. Sport Buckets are 55 lbs lighter. That is, take the GT3 base weight of 3175 - 55 (sport buckets) = 3120 lbs = same weight as RS. Hmmm....

The RS does get the polycarbonate rear window, but not in US.

Even with same weight and power, the RS would be faster in a straight line, thanks to lower gearing.

3,020 lbs, I believe. But published weight is always very "optimistic"...

I had a lightly optioned 2002 C2 with published weight of 2,965 and it tipped the scales at over 3,200 pounds without driver.

I think this is a valid point. I think both of your figures are off by 100 lbs.

GT3 = 3075
GT3 RS = 3020

I do agree that the LWFW would be a nice option to have!

It will be interesting to see what the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time comes in at.

Should be in the 7:3X range, right?

Extra weight:

- Front and rear tires: 1 lbs per corner (per Michelin specs): 4 lbs total
- 1/2" wider wheels: 1 lb to 1.5 lbs per corner: 3 lbs total
- Front fenders flares, I would be surprised if this FRP parts exceed 0.5 lbs combined.
- Wider rear fenders, I doubt that there is more of 5 lbs of extra steel on the fenders
- Rear wing is carbon with aluminum uprights, it should be lighter than the 2010 GT3 FRP uprights and wing.

So, the RS gets less than 15 lbs of extra weight over the GT3.

Weight Reduction:
- 22 lbs lighter battery (smart move from Porsche, to avoid carbon body panels)
- 11 lbs lighter LWFW (assuming the same 2007 RS LWFW is being used, and compared to the 2010 FW weight)
- 2 lbs per door panels
- If the three mufflers are made of titanium, they can cut weight by over 30 lbs.

The official weight from Porsche is:

RS: 3,020 lbs
GT3: 3,075 llbs

as usual these numbers are off by 100 lbs with an empty fuel tank, and in excess of 200 lbs for a car with a full tank of fuel. If you don't believe it, put your car on scales.

The Carbon GT2 seats in leather are just 37 lbs lighter than the standard seats in the 987/997. Going with flame retardant fabric, takes another 4 lbs.

The ROW 1-piece Carbon in leather save 59 lbs over the standard seats in the 987/997. Going with flame retardant fabric, takes another 4 lbs. These seats are not offered as an option in U.S.

Gearing in 1st-5th is supposed to be 15% shorter and hence the slightly improved acceleration times. Drag got worse and hence the lower top speed.
