I did a write up on the R8 a few months ago, maybe even a year ago. drove it around town and was completely unimpressed. I've also spent a few hours in a modified r8 on the track- the car was not for me- despite looking fantastic at certain angles, it's just the performer I was hoping for...

R8 is cool but the GT3 RS would be my choice.
Are you looking for the car to be just a toy? Porsche hands down.
Do you want to be fast on the track in all kinds of weather and without trying too hard. The R8 will make you look like a hero and will do it's best not to crash. The GT3 will try to kill you for not driving it right. But you will feel so much better at the end of the day if the GT3 keeps the same shape it had in the morning.
Daily driver? I'd look at the R8 as it would definitely be more civilized.
If you already own a 996 GT3 you will not enjoy the R8 as much as you would enjoy the 997 GT3. But it would definitely be different. Can you test drive the R8? Do it.

I recently drove a student's R8 for a whole session in Homestead (yes, he insisted...).
The car felt very good, even on street tires; out of the box nicer than a C2S. If track work is the priority, any GT3 can be set up to be as fast or faster than a stock R8. In stock form the R8 is still very flat in the corners and is not easily upsets by curbs and the like. yet, if feels agile and would tend to power oversteer in the slow corners. I can only imagine how fast a well prepared R8 would be on the track.
BTW, the interior is very nicely done but the outward visibility is not as good as in the P car.

Had a deposit on an R8 for over one year...got a GT3 RS and withdrew the deposit, In my openion neither car is a practical daily driver due to ground clearance..Love the RS and Love my daily driver an RS 60 Spyder (Boxster) nimble comfy and LOOKS AWSOME.
Not sure about the R8 V10 as a daily driver either?? would get a gently used F430 for that kind of money
