Default RS Engine Whistle Sound

Had the RS out recently and started hearing a pretty loud whistling/whirring sound from the engine bay at anything over 1500 RPM's. The sound was something I've never heard before on the RS or the GT3. It died at idle and was present whether the car was moving or not. I tried to localize it but didn't have much luck. Any ideas?

Wouldn't I be getting oil leaks? It's dry at the moment.

No idea. Take it to the dealer. They will plug it in and you will know within a couple minutes. Maybe it is an intake(air) issue. The last thing it is would be a RMS.

Thanks - that's the plan. Just thought one of you guys might have experienced the same noise at some time.

I've had the same. It comes and goes. Sometimes for a month. Then no whistling sound for a couple of months. Then back again. Now it'sd off again. My dealer tried a lot of things. Never found the cause.

It may well be the presure control valve in the power steering reservoir.

Sorry to hear that. Those are the things that drive you nuts.

Thanks. I'll mention that when I take it in to the dealer.

Seems like I hear a different noise every time I drive the car. I've trained myself to ignore most of them.

I used to have a rattle in the engine at around 2600 RPM that I could only hear when car was warm, but hot. Sounded like a chain was rattling, or a piston was rolling around. Scared me for a while. Lasted for months. (I even avoided 2600 RPM until the car was really hot.)

1 track day and the sound went away. (Noticed some other changes as well after first track day. Oil pressure gauge, etc.) In hindsight, I think the car just needed good exercise to full break in the engine and all the parts.

OMG, I thought I was the only one. I have a whistling that sounds a bit like a kettle on the boil. I hear it on the overrun, not acceleration. If I hold the revs at 4k (clutch pressed) then release the throttle, I hear it as the revs fall. It's not there all the time and it's sometimes more noticeable than other times. It's quite subtle, though - never actually loud.

It's been to the dealer many times but to no avail. There is an overrun bearing in the alternator that the dealer suspected, but it turned out not to be that. Dealer was prepared to drop the engine to search for it but I said no. It's annoying sometimes but I can live with it. BTW, my car is a 996 RS, daily driver, occasional trackdays, no oil leaks.

If anyone learns anything new about this odd problem, please post it.

Yep, tea kettle is about right, except mine is loud enough to get on your nerves after a few minutes.

Lol super old thread, but I am curious too. My E36 M3 does almost this exact same thing -

I took it couple of BMW shops, no luck. When I dug around BMW forums, I read that "serpentine belt" is a possible cause. Not sure if that is also a factor for 911s. The noise stopped then so I didn't follow it up anymore.
