SWS1- your close, I think.
I believe I read in last months Pano rag (Cotton's page) that the next RS (2010 I think) will have a whopping 400 hp and a 4.5 secs to 60?? And No more Carrera's , just a cheapened (ha ha) 911S and a CarreraRS as the top of the line 911!
Say I read it wrong. ( left my copy at FL home)
Get (or keep) the 3's now HP wars are close to over

The point being made is that Porsche created the perception of a hard core track car with the 996 GT3 (ala e30 M3), built up a cult following in which the majority of people call it a racecar (some don't, but many do), and then slowly adds more and more options and features to make it more and more profitable, and detract from the original intent.
Another way of saying it...
On the street car to race car spectrum, let's say the 996 is in the mid-point. I'll bet that over with each subsequent version, the GTx cars will get closer and closer to street than they will race car. That's fine, except the image of the car is that of being closer to race.
Me? I'm looking forward to the convertible Tiptronic GT3 in 2015, with 4 spare tires crammed in the trunk, and a jack pre-loaded in each corner.

Clearly the history of the RS name doesn't mean much to Porsche except a way to make more $. I'm out if they do that. Just like I gave up on BMW M. Guess I will be moving to Ferrari.

take it for what it is. RS is part legend and part marketing. granted porsche makes some strange decisions, but the gov't aint helping either with all the latest safety requirements that add wt.
and if they drop RS by 100lbs over GT3, that's really not all that much. now 300 lbs, i do doing back flips, but i dont expect that.
