Default Volk Wheels

For those running Volk TE37 wheels - can you use the stock lug bolts?

Thanks

Another good cheap option for 18" and 19" track wheels is coming soon as Damon at Tirerack is getting the Ultraleggeras in those sizes

Why is that different?

The diameter of the "key" tool doesn't fit into the lug bolt spaces of the wheel?

Yes, I am also curious, what do you mean by this?

I've been using the stock lugs, including the keyed one, for some time without issues.

Thanks!

I dunno if anyone realizes that there are 2 main kinds of lug seats on wheels - ball seat and cone seat. The factory Porsche wheels all have a ball seat which is a rounded concave mating surface for the lug. Most aftermarket wheels have a conical or cone seat which is not concave. Using a cone seat lug on a ball seat flange yields inconsistent lug bolt torque and vice versa. Perhaps this is what he means by safety lugs.

Humm that is sure something that I would want to figure out when I buy an extra set of rims. I guess I would ask if i could use the stock lugs but I should as if it is ball or cone. good to know.

Yes, you can use the OEM lugs & star/security lugs. The "key" works fine for install....
I bought the 19" from Tire Rack w/the conti3's and te37 even have the seating correct on the inside of the rim. So they fit perfectly for me.
Though I did have to have the fronts re-balanced......nothing is free.

Todd

yep that was wot happened. So I guess my tire shop didnt have the thin wall key tool.

So I bought a set of aftermkt one that fits perfectly. It's also a star shape kind security lug.

Thanks, good info. I just checked my wheels and they have a "ball seat" as you define, so that part is ok.

So to be clear, seems like the original concern was casted because of the theft-deterrent lugs and the related "key" not fitting (although that has not been an issue for me either).

Just clarifying that we were not dealing with a safety concern about a lug not being able to be properly torqued.

I have had some aftermarket wheels that would not allow a standard deep 1/2" drive 19mm socket to fit into the lug hole. In those instances the options are:

1)Change to a BMW/Mercedes style lug bolt - same 14x1.5mm thread pitch but with a 17mm hex head instead of the 19mm Porsche hex head. This is very easy to do with a lug bolt and you can get either cone or ball seat lugs as needed. A standard deep 1/2" drive 17mm socket has a smaller O.D. and can fit into tighter lug holes

2)retain the factory 19mm lug bolt but use a 3/8" drive deep 19mm thinwall socket. The 3/8" drive deep sockets are usually significantly smaller in O.D. than the 1/2" drive sockets. On 993's there is no option to go to a smaller head lug nut so I use this option.
