Question Poll- For those who track your GT3- what kind of shoes

I'm at the track on the stock tires (mspc), wheels, and PCCB.

Looking into getting a set of "track wheels and tires" since I've got garage access at the track (storage not an issue) and also because I'm planning on 50+ track days between now and february.

I've got a potential hook up on 18" tires and was thinking that with all the "tire" threads recently we can just put our info here-

anyhow- how many of you guys have switched to 18" wheels, and what specs did you go with? I've got to clear the big yellow rotors.

in regards to the tires- some of you have favorites. Some of you have used 3 or more types. Will the 18"s actually last any longer or are they just cheaper to replace?

Nitto- mixed use. shaved or not?
Hoosier r6- track only.
MSPC- mixed use or track only? (really bad in the wet)
Toyo R888- mixed use- shaved or not?
PS2- for the street, and something else for the track?
Yokohama advan- does anyone use these?
Kumho- anyone?

Nitto NT-01 Non-Shaved 245 and 315s on 18 x 8.5 & 12s

Next time I will try Toyo R888 235 and 305s to compare.

Ordered CCW 18" rims yesterday with R888s - 255/35 front and 315/30 rears. Until now have been on stock 19s with MPSC.

kevin, you should do either 245/305 or 255/315 with R888's

Not that I have a horse in the race but.... I would be weary of putting too much tire on these cars. Porsche designed the cups w/2600 lbs. to run on 240/280 series tires on 9's and 11's. Sometimes less is more (thanks moonbeam) and getting up into the 255/315 range might actually slow these cars down.

Case-in-point, my racing friend J.Payne with his hightly modifyed older 911 weighing 2200lbs. empty and pushed by a 997 cup motor has tried those larger rims & tires. He tested them last Dec. at Willow Springs and found he was a second quicker on the OEM cup rims and tires w/the same brand tires. A second at willow is huge. Now if that car feels the resistance from the larger tires at his HP to weight ratio, I would think the street GT3's & RS's would feel it even more. Perhaps not, but food for thought on this lazy July 4th afternoon in 102 degree temps....

PS: It's 8:1 in the 4th. Relax and check out the girls dressed in red, white, and blue for us. Oh wait, you're in Baltimore...

haha yeah it's okay dude I don't fit in my own poll, that's why I'm asking!

JRgordon- I'm with you. most of the tracks we run on in texas don't have enough rubber laid down to need or use that extra tire, just seems like putting too much weight in a rotating position!

My car came on Pirelli Corsa System Tyres.

I've also tried the 19" N rated Michelin Cup+ tyres.

I bought a second set of wheels (Champion RG5's) and mounted some Hoosier R6's (f 235/35/19 r 325/30/19) on them.

I am a big fan of the Corsa system. The best all round road legal tyre money can buy. Brilliant on road/track/wet/dry/hot cold. Wear rate is reasonable too.

The Cup+'s I didn't like. Felt more like a PS2 to me. Not good in the wet. Lacking outright grip and consistency. Feel a little nervous on the road. Wear rate is poor too.

The R6's are fantastic. Absolutely addictive. Last really well too (provided you heat cycle them first).

Quick note on the Champion RG5's. They are substantially lighter (and stronger) than the standard wheels. You can really feel the weight saving if you drive the car on the limits.

I like the added margin of grip the Hoo-Hoo's give me. I'd rather switch wheels and tires at the track than switch body panels and suspension parts at the repair shop.

Good data point. Although since he is lighter he's at different place on the tire normal force vs. grip plot ( I think this is in Bruce Anderson's book) so even wider tires would be like going even lighter and he's already not putting much weight on the tire in relation to the tire's contact patch size. Since gt3s are 1000 pounds heavier they have much more weight per area of contact patch so it's feasible that they would benefit much more from wider tires. Modified tuner GT3s are proven to be faster on wider rubber (like 265 275/ 315 325) and the Cup S cars run 270/310 tires don't they? Damn it's hot today, I was thinking of replacing a fuel pump on my old e30 today, but air conditioning is too nice now...

MPSC. They can be driven if it is damp but in all out rain Dunlop Racing Rain Slicks are like driving with the hand of God as your copilot. THey are that good.

2:17 is about as fast as a 996 GT3 will go around Calabogie (3 miles, 20 odd corners). Same guy who did the 2:17 was 5 sec. a lap SLOWER with R888s than MPSCs. He has gone back to MPSCs. Everything he tries and everytime he goes back to cups.
