Default LWFW why?

Can someone explain the benefit of LWFW? My car RMS is leaking and I am considering LWFW but am still confused on the benefit of doing it. My car is purely used at the track so confort has no value to me. What I do not understand is how much of a difference it can make knowing that the 3 and 3RS have the same specifications.

Thanks,

Stephan

less rotational mass
your engine has to turn less weight so it revs quicker... particulary advantageous with the engines in the GT3 as you can get to the "meat" of the powerband quicker...

Less drag on the engine, less engine braking, etc...

First mod on my 996 GT3 and still the best so far.

It is a must do if you are in the area... although there are a lot of posts regarding LWFW and pulley bolts on the 997... not sure if that has all been resolved.

I would do it again and again...

it's easier and quicker to rev-match.

Not sure I completely get this. Sure, when heel-toeing and blipping the throttle I can see that the engine (spinning less mass) would rev quicker - not sure this is necessarily an advantage as it is mainly a timing thing under braking...but maybe I would prefer it, don't know.
However, once in gear and reving through the power band it seems to me that the forces involved through the gear box, diff, and putting the power down to the pavement (moving the mass of the car) would swamp the savings gained from less rotational mass in the fly wheel, especially in a relatively heavy street car. Maybe it's subtle but I'm not sure a LWFW will help you get to the redline any faster.
No doubt you are saving weight with a LWFW, generally lowering the weight of the car which of course is a good thing.

A lot of people really like the LWFW tho and think it's a great mod - so what am I missing?

1st-2nd are a blurr with the LWFW. Even 3rd is faster but not as much difference. I did mine back in 2006 . Back then someone did the math on the virtual hp gain. mass/gearing/rpm/hp = gain. All I know the car is way better with it.

Great mod for track cars for the reasons already stated. Think quick revving like a sport bike, makes heel toe shifting a bit easier and makes car more responsive to the throttle (both good and bad as it can amplify speed of weight transfer when you cut the throttle).

Due to reduced rotational mass, there is a modest impact on acceleration in lower gears (think heavy gyroscope and the force needed to spin it up). Makes no impact on hp/tq, however. Though I recall about 10 years ago grassroots motorsports did some experiments in a volkswagon rabbit or gulf. They 'found' power in gears 1 and 2, but that was due to use of a inertial dyno (dynojet), rather than a loading dyno like the mustang dyno.

The statements above are all spot on. My favorite is in regards to heel/toe. The downshift blips require less throttle play. A quick tap is all that is required...

In stock and it works with the OEM clutch.
