There were a few BMWs interspersed along the way, but my Porsche history is:

'77 911S blk/blk 2.7 targa
'84 blk/burgundy 3.2 Carrera sunroof coupe
'80 (gray market) blk/blk 3.3 930 sunroof coupe...used to call this one Darth Vader
'88 blk/taupe 2.7(?) 944 turbo sunroof coupe
'91 944S2 3.0 titanium/blk cab
'04 40th Anniversary 996 coupe

next will be 997S or possibly 997 GT3

Never aspired to own a Pcar, or a Ferrari. In high school, aspired to be an engineer and own a BMW. Became an engineer, bought a BMW, hated engineering, loved the BMW, became a lawyer, then cycled through 3 996s, 2 997s and now an old school 964. After I finish restoring the 964 Turbo, I'll think about some new sheet metal.

Switched from the BMW camp b/c the new cars look like ***. Now I'm hooked on pcars, but will always own an older BMW.

as a kid the ferrari F40 and porsche 959 were on my walls...started saving up at age 8. Made fantastic career choice at 9 to start playing little league baseball. bought a bike at age 12.5, learned how to play the stock market with my lawn mower money at 13, got a few grand together and sat on it.

after 3 years of volvo ownership, I got some money from above mentioned career together and went shopping for what I thought was going to be a 911SC coupe- ended up going for the gusto and got my first 911.

Jan 03- 993S- guards red/black. drove it all over america while in the minor leagues
May 06- went on the deposit list for a 997GT3- waited patiently
November 06- saw a cool car online- 993 3.8L TT...sold the 993S for it + change
October 31st, 2007- took delivery of my cobalt blue 2008 997GT3 in europe...drove all over
Jan 08- got a chance to get the GT3RS, had to sell my cobalt car...
Jan 08- went on the list for DFI gt3RS and next gen CGT- we'll see when they come out!

Oh yeah...continously since 1980 (sophmore in college, paid $7500 for the '72 with money I made/saved working at Harris-Teeter grocery store in Charlotte).

Got the "bug" from my dad...his car was a 1931 Ford Model A Cabriolet...he drove it every day until 1966, then restored it and used as a show car. It sits in my garage today next to the Turbo and GT3. Funny, when people come over, they walk right past both P-cars to the Ford...

You may be sorry you asked... here are a few memories from my first 911.

(I always thought Porsches were just expensive VWs, until a friend let me drive his 1973 911T Targa. From that day, there was no turning back.)

1976 911S – I couldn't afford a house and a Porsche.. so, I chose the Porsche. I lived with a friend and on my way to the shower, the morning after delivery; I looked out the window and was horrified to see two kids riding toward it on bicycles! Sure enough, one crashed into the engine compartment and fell to the pavement. Wearing nothing but a towel, I flew out the door and jumped over the bleeding kid to check for damage! As luck would have it, he hit the rear bumperette… and only left a removable tire-tread mark! Poor guy… I must have scared him to death. And that probably started my paranoia with street parking!

Great car… I saw 150 mph (indicated) more than once and learned a lot (mostly sideways) about rear-engine Porsches.

I will never forget cresting a hill (at night) going way too fast, only to see a cop standing at a driver’s window. I knew if I slowed he would have me, so I hit the gas instead, and blew by him at 120 mph. Thirty minutes later and still shaking, I slowly headed back, expecting the coast to be clear. Not so. He pulled me over and asked where I was coming from. I lied that I had just driven in from the airport (miles away). He asked if I knew of any other Porsches in the area and I said, (with a straight face) “No.. Why, are you a Porsche fan?”

God, I hope my own kids don’t read this.

That car was the beginning of a life-long passion for me. People would say, “You could buy a house with the money you have in that Porsche”.

It didn’t matter.

Hemingway once said that pheasant shooting was so much fun, it was worth whatever it cost. That sums up how I have always felt about 911s. There was never any way to justify the cost; it is just one of those things that I have never been able to live without.

That first VIN is still imprinted in my brain: 9116201212.

Maybe one of you has it in your garage?

F4 Pilot what and when did you fly? I worked on WILD WEASELS in the 561st.
That won fun. NOTHING like a brand new looking right off the showroom floor F4G!

I've loved P-cars since I was 5....We lived in So-cal when I was a kid and our friends had a 74 911, I loved to ride in it...My parents moved us to Washington State to raise us..Every time we went back to Laguna Beach to visit, she (shirley) knew how much I loved that white 911 and we would take rides through the canyons and up and down PCH, just me 5-14 years old and Shirley, a true California free spirit...Whenever my mom said we were going to see Shirley, I couldn't wait...14 years later (at 28) I got my first 964 911...well, you can see the list of what I've gone through since..and Shirley? she got re-married and lives in Omaha..
