Mooty has authorized me to speak for him (j/k).

It is his personal ambition to own every GT3 ever built, multiple times!

This is a fun thread! Very interesting to read everyone's stories. If I may indulge a bit, I'm going to write a long one! Mine started in 1986 when I was 11 years old.

My older brother rewarded himself for hard work by buying a 1986 944 8-valve off the showroom floor at MCL Motors. I didn't know anything about Porsches, but I loved the smell of the car and the way it looked in red. Because of my brother's car, I followed all things 944 related. I watched Richard Spenard and David Empringham hammering away at tracks all over North America in the Rothmans Turbo Cup. Even Paul Tracy made it into a few races and he whined back then too!

In 1989, I fell head over heals for the 959. It was the ultimate car, in my eyes, bar none. There was no need for any car manufacturer to even bother! Then came the white Brumos 964 Turbos raced in IMSA and the amazing FAT Turbo Express 962's and the domination they had at endurance racing. In 1996, I got hired by a great company in Canada to do tier 1 technical support. I was in that role only six months before I decided to take out a HUGE loan (at least in my eyes) and buy the car of my dreams, a 1989 930 Turbo.

I called a local second-hand dealer in Vancouver to buy a 930 Turbo he had and drove down to see it. When I arrived, the dealer was really shady about the car and didn't even have it in stock. He treated me very poorly and made me feel very small and poor. So, I went up the road to another second-hand dealer called Weissach. I was greeted by the co-owner, Paul Rossmo. He was amazingly kind and respectful and showed me a stunning red 1989 944 Turbo S he had in stock for $29k. To my further amazement, he offered to let me test drive it. Remember that I'm 21 years old at this time! Driving off the lot, I looked back at my friend and smiled; that was when I made the decision to buy the car, it fit me perfect.

I kept the 944 Turbo S for 5.5 years and put 80,000km on it. I LOVED that car. I daily drove it, autocrossed it, tracked it and even drag raced it at the track. The car continues to provide enjoyment to its new owner who recently wrote saying how good the car has been to him. I hope that car never dies and one day, I might buy it back to restore it.

After the 944 Turbo S, I then decided to finally get into a 911 Turbo in 2001 and grossly overpaid for a midnight blue 964 Turbo. There were none around for years in Canada so when this one came up, I snapped it up. No matter how hard I tried to love this car, I never connected with it. I took it autocrossing, track days and drag racing, but I just could not stand the mechanical fuel injection. It consumed so much fuel just driving around town that I think I personally increased the temperature of Vancouver by a few degrees.

In 2004, one of my good friends put his 993 Turbo up for sale with 23,000km. He had wanted a price that was way out of reach for me. As the date came for his new 996 GT3, he started to drop his price by $5k every few weeks. Finally, I got a call while he was at the dealer picking up his GT3. He told me the dealer has offered X and if I paid X+3k, it's mine. Keep in mind that this car would represent 2X my GROSS earnings and I was only 29 years old... I drove down to the dealership with numbers rushing through my brain. I knew I could not do it and should not do it, but those curves and that power, I had to do it.

In 2007, I fell in love with a white GT3 I saw while on a business trip to Vancouver. I decided to try my hand at a new Porsche and bought the 997 GT3. Much like the 993, I really can't afford this car, but life is short, I'm a dreamer, and as long as I treat people with dignity, respect and care, somehow, things always seem to work themselves out.

Thanks for allowing me to share my story

Someone requested longer story.

At 10 years old, in Taiwan, dad bought his first nice car. A buick park avenue. It takes 12 months for the thing to arrive. Every weekend when we go out dinner, he would park his VW K70 (it’s like the 70’s version of jetta) on the top floor of parking structures and we would walk our way down while he taught me different brands, models etc…. then I got hooked.

After immigrating to USA, there are a lot more cars which I have never seen before: Porsche and Ferrari were not common there, if existed at all. Dad soon bought an used SC. I learned how to double clutch, blip and coax the 915 gear box into gear. Didn’t quite understand why it’s a good car, AC didn’t work well, str wheel is way too heavy for me and I can’t really see where I was goig (I was 13 or so I think, maybe 15, but I sure didn’t have a license)… then dad bought a 928s so mom can drive (she still can’t drive manual shift). That monster has torque!!!, I drove really fast into the driveway and GLADLY the garage door was open else I would have taken out the door… I head on’d into a tons of sweaters and carboard boxes (we manufatctured sweaters, store lots of inventory in garage, came in handy as bumper stops for my MaD SkiLLs)…

Then dad bought a speedster, we both loved the car very much…. I finally saw the light and loved porsches and all the noises it made.

Off to college. Then I think was in grad school, I lumped together enough money from part time jobs over the years,…. More like a whole decade and siphoned my tuition as well to buy a 964 cab. I hated red cars and loathed beige inteior and certainly would not touch convertibles. At the Oakland Porsche dealership, I bought a RED ext, BEIGE int, CAB… as you can see I really got the combo I wanted ;-) it was the cheapest newish car they had, and I was desperate….

Didn’t keep it long.

Drove a lot of bmw’s for quite some time.

Then bought a new 996c2. Sold it to buy C4s as I needed women with large ***… oh. I mean cars….

Then realized tracking was kind of fun. Sold C4S and bought C2… figuring I am a REAL man, AWD not needed (aha… right)…. But loved 993’s look, bought my good friend’s gorgeous 993c2 (wreck me otter’s)… hated the useless gear box. It’s gear’d completely wrong. Sold it to cousin…. Bought a yellow GT3 at a whim… like it, didn’t love it. Mom visted and thought only playboys drove yellow cars, so she promptly sold it FOR me while I was at work… yes, my mom has a lot of POWER…. Waiting for my daughter’s arrival, I thought I should grow up and bought S4 avant. I was mature for about 6 months, then added a white GT3… then strange viral demon got me so I sold an bought a few more GT3’s. but I have recovered from that.. I think. For now anyways.

Added RS. I love it. Will NEVER show it to mom. Only playboys would drive orange cars, she would say, undoubtedly.

Oh, before 996C2 I bought a boxster S… my ah….. “niece” thought it was cute. It was silver car…. But you see, playboys only drive orange, yellow and green cars.. silver shows I am mature and sincere… so much for that.

I bought a 987 S b/c I mistakenly sold my GT3 and my always broken E36M3 track car and my cayman S hasn’t arrived yet. Of course, 3 days after I bought the fkg box S, my cayman s arrived. Oh well…I swapped them. I loved the cayman S. the motor isn’t as stout as GT3, but the chassis dynamic is really phenomenal. I thought if one is good, three would be better. So I bought two more…. Must be early midlife crisis. You know passing 35 and all.. I sold them b/c thing keep breaking after tracking. Then I had a lotus right before my RS showed up. Of course, like the 987S, as soon as I drove the lotus home, my RS showed up 4 months ahead of schedule…. I kept the lotus as long as I can tolerate wife’s nagging (it was a great car to haul daughter to day care, she arrived in style… no doubt) sold it to good friend, the car, not the daughter.

Then I got a horrible GT3 viral infection again, so bought the white car. So far, I have no itches to buy anything else, that’s pretty rare… I hope this addiction lighten up a bit. I am tired of setting up cars…

Whew, that was a long post. But you asked.

"Old Guy" In Vietnam F4 "D's" and "E's" including almost 100 missions in a one of a kind configured "E" model as we added 2 more 20mm gun pods to an "E" and I flew it low level into North VietNam as a single ship hunter. Only one bird configured that way and only 5 of us ever to fly it. I was the youngest and thus flew the most missions. Boy that was a long time ago.

Since I have the floor anyone with comments pro or con on the Cayenne. I'm about to trade my Corvette and Toyoto truck on one. Need for a good tow vehicle (that is not too large my lovely bride of 41 years clearly states), a good multi person traveling vehicle with supportive seats and I want to pair down the number of vehicles we have. Would really appreciate any comments or observations. Thanks

i drove all the SUV's in the cayenne size class and fine the pepper to be the best handling.

two friends tow 996's in enclosed trailers with pepper S with no prob.

you NEED cayenne S or turbo or GTS. do not i repeat DO NOT get the 6 cylinder as even my wife found it painfully slow.

Mooty, geez, I need a cigarrette!

---------------------------------
A note on towing. Same issues with Pepper or X5; make sure you get a good quality antisway/load distribution hitch like the Equalizer. Pretty important if you are going enclosed, as the pepper is not an F350 diesel (short wheelbase, lighter, and generally less stout for heavy towing).

Also, putting in a brake controller for the trailer is a bit of a PITA with the X5; I've read the same things with the Pepper (issues with error codes).

If I didn't rely on the X5 for daily duty (kids to school, dogs to the trail, mountain biking), I'd have chosen a better tow vehicle (3/4 ton p/u).

Thanks guts for the comments. I will only be towing either the '83 SC and or the '07 GT3 on an open trailex alum trailer so the max will be =just over 4000 lbs with the GT3 and I have surge brakes on the trailer. That said I won't be towing the GT3 for at least the next two weeks as it is going in for an oil leak. Discovered a small leak at around 500 miles (it now has 2400) and the dealer said just watch it. I did, today we put it on a lift and it is clear it is the rear main seal. It will be in the shop for at least several days next week. Oh well at least they were pro-active towards fixing it and the tech that will do the work has done one on a GT3 before. Thanks again for the suggestions and recommendations on the Cayenne. My wife and I drove a "S" today and were impressed. I sat in a sold GTS and those seats are very nice but not another 10-15 thousand nice. That plus we get some gully washers here and with standing water on the streets the extra wide tires of the GTS may be more prone to hydroplaning. The dealer is looking for one configured the way we want it as we speak and or type. Thanks again.

Excellent

With my father being a car freak - he still has a 1929 Ford B and a '32 Ford V8 - I got hooked early. I grew up on what has to be considered waay out in the country, and I was about 17(!) the first time I ever saw a Porsche... this was in I guess '86, I was helping clearing material waste from a building site for charity when a maroon 928S drove past, then floored it - the sight and the rumble is something I still remember to this day. I just knew I had to get one.

After graduating from university in '93 I was able to cash in all of my student loan (worked now and then through university) and was essentially at zero. I saved hard and 6 months into professional life I finanzed half cash half loan my first 1980-mod 928S 3-sp auto. I jumped into it head over heals, heart first, paying way over list (and what I could afford) because the dude saw I was hooked. Found out later the service book was cleverly falsified, and that the engine was replaced with a '82. After variouis repairs I remember once in the grocery store contemplating buying bread or milk .... Sold it 2 years later when I moved.

Then bought my 993 in 2001, a car I will never sell. It’s truly a great car, a collectible, and for me it represents the pinnacle of 4 decades of engineering development, starting from one man’s dream of how a car, its engine and handling characteristics should be like. Driving and there's the interior smell... I can pick up a cappuccino at Starbucks, go to the beach, park it, close the doors with the characteristic THUMP, and listen to the tinkling noise of the cooling exhaust while - with my back to the beach - watching the wide rear with the sea & sunset reflecting in the (10-layer'ed Zaino) doors

Being unable to leave the V8 behind I ran across my current 928 in 2003, it had a single owner from new and was in un-touched original condition, with all the specs I ever wanted on a 928. Unless mistaken it's the cheapest Porsche the local dealer has sold off their showroom floor I am now about to complete an almost back to factory condition "mild" restoration of this car, and can not possibly see how I emotionally can part with it.

The RS is a whole new experience to me. Although I'm busy with my two small kids these days and don't have too much time to drive it as I should, it is plain simple spectacular just being able to experience first-hand such outstanding engineering perfection. Ordering and spec'ing it truly to my desire was also a great experience. And God knows it's GREEN!

I have no regrets and if I was to drop tomorrow I would at least know I enjoyed every tiny bit out of it!

Great story! That reminds me of 2001 when I had the 91 911 Turbo. I had so little liquid cash that I didn't have enough money to pay for gas some days, so I'd take the bike to work, haha.

It's crazy what we'll do for cars sometimes, although Mooty makes all of us look sane
