I was hoping that then next GT3 would not be out for a while so that our cars hold their value for a while. I am not worried, but it would be nice. But if they announce a new a better GT3 in two months, then I will be slightly annoyed.

It should come at the earliest in spring of '09 as a 2001 model, not in February like Mr. MK1GT3 claims and has a deposit for.

Porsche have a lot of new products and 987/997 facelifts to launch beforehand.
Exactly, that would make more sense. What was the timeline for 996GT3 Mk1>Mk2? Do you have some specific production date ranges for the two models?

Keep in mind, the mk2 just increase engine to 3.8 DFI and LED's stuff, so I don't think that take so much time for Porsche.

Nowadays, Porsche make changes very quick, there is no timescale and so call history to track.

Of course, I am not certain about the timing, but the mk1 GT3 was announced in 2006, so 2 years later for some upgrade version does make sense to me.

I doubt it. You push a button and it's off. It's not like PSM significantly alters the driving experience.

I got some info about the new GT3/RS.

Unlike the RSR, the engine won't be a 3.8.

They gonna add DFI and increase around 20HP and that's it.

They will keep the 3.8 for 998.

DFI makes sense since it's already on the Cayennes. I doubted that they would switch over to a 3.8 anytime soon. Otherwise, they would have done the GT2 in 3.8 since it's a new model or waited until next year to release the GT3 in a 3.8 and blow the automotive world away. The current 3.8 is not a split case and will require a lot of burn in time to get it to the reliability of the 3.6.

The HP increase comes directly from the use of DFI and maybe some ECU tweaks to take advantage. MkII will probably have a slight facelift in the rear lights and bumpers

I would also say the MkII will be at least MY2010 model if you were to follow the path of the 996 MkI and MKIIs.

The cool thing about DFI is that it increases torque across the range, not just hp at the top end. To gain hp you need only enable the engine to rev higher, which does not necessarily help things lower down the rev band. But DFI is like enlarging the engine in as much as it makes more torque (thus hp) everywhere. And magically uses less fuel in the process.

I believe DFI increases torque by about 8-10%, certainly in the midrange, and hopefully at the top too. So I think a 3.6 DFI GT3 should see a peak torque of 320+ lb-ft, and peak power of 440+ hp. It should feel noticeably beefier at all revs compared with the current non-DFI engine.

And I'm thinking the 998 will be a flat-8.

It's possible, though, that the huge pressures and forces inside a GT2/TT engine are such that it becomes difficult to increase to 3.8L. The internals and structure of the Turbo engine need to be very strong, much stronger than the n/a GT3 version due to the extra torque. Also, it's easy to increase both tq and hp of a Turbo by simply turning up the boost.

To increase power of the GT3 engine, the internals need to be light rather than strong. That's because it produces way less torque than the turbo, but needs to rev much higher. So it may be that the GT3 engine is easier to enlarge than the TT engine. The RSR shows that it can be done.
