Default Placement for a tracking device

I have to install a tracking device (for insurance policy) in my 997 GT3 and needs to find a place to hide the tracking device. The device is the size of a match box so the space doesn't need to be large.

Any suggestions?

I would't necessarily discuss on a public forum where you'd be hiding your car's tracking device.

take the car to an installer, and let the installer decide.

Quite frankly, these devices are completely useless when it comes to protection against professional thieves - they move the cars in shielded trucks and 'clean' them at their leisure in shielded warehouses. Buy a stolen car in Moscow, tell the police its stolen and 366 days later you get clear title to the car.

If an amateur thief steals the car, you don't want it back.

Most of us who travel much in Europe build up a database of hotels with secure garages where its safe to stay. Castles with drawbridges are always good.

It's not a matter of what I want, but it is a demand from my insurance company.

I have used Swiss and German insurance companies and Lloyds brokers. When I pointed out the futility of such devices, they did not insist that any additional device be fitted. Its just some jumped up clerk making life difficult. Porsche has fitted immobilisers for some years (since citizens of Germany's eastern neighbours started collecting them).

Incidentally, I cannot imagine the insurance company not insisting on an authorised installer fitting the device.

I'm assuming these devices use GPS to track location so it would be a trivial matter to also track speed. I wonder if the insurance company's real interest is using any evidence of excessive speed in trying to reduce or deny an accident claim...

I am not trying to start a discussion about the use/effectiveness/purpose of the tracking device. All I am concerned with is to obey the demand from my insurance company.

Most countries have licenced installers of tracking devices - go to one your insurance company suggests.

A dishonest installer can fit the tracker and then sell the information to a thief..........

Fitting these devices can get complicated (you need a separate power source, for example, so it still works when the battery is disconnected.

Have you asked the insurance company what kind of tracker to fit, and who to get to install it?

This isn't a DIY exercise. Your P dealership should know who to use as well.

This is DIY product. The battery is integrated into the unit as well as the aerial. A new battery is sent to the car owner once a year. Is it not necessary to use a licensed installer. The product can be found here: http://www.guardsystems.com/default.aspx?url=267.aspx

as you have to get at it on an annual basis, why not tape it inside the door?
