Default What is this part?

While routing some wiring for a battery charger, I found this small (about three inches) plastic part just floating loose under the flap for the under-screen air-filter (see arrow).

I just can't fathom out what it should be attached to.

Any ideas?

Edit: The part number doesn't seem to appear in PET, although 997 572 ~ seems to refer to 'water protection', which doesn't seem to be a huge help.

That's an assembly line worker's German bento box. Wurst goes in the middle, beers in the slots. He was too bloated to carry it over to the trash and thus left it in your car. PAG's seen this before, so they cover themselves by calling it some nonsensical part.

That is a framus cover for your granistat. Without that part your flux capicitor will only work at half power.

Sorry, had to join in. Have no idea what it is. I do know that Porsche makes some parts that are assembly aids and are not part of the finished product. These plastic parts are sometimes used to keep a sub assembly aligned for quick installation.

An alien implant?

What LoJack claims is your tracking device?

The source of your rattle?

A check of the full part number: 997.572.862.01 should reveal its identity.

Seems to be some type of mask. Look in the trunk to see if you can find a matching leather outfit and some whips.

Looks like it's a cover to keep water off the top of the dessicator cylinder connections.

ps. Is there a place to download a PET update or it all on-line only now?

Like the mystery part that dropped out from under the steering column on my old 89' volvo. my friend was like "What's this from?" and I was like "Dunno, but on the bright side my car will rattle less!"

Haven't had time to do a pic, but it clips to the front of the pollen filter, just to stop the floppy flap (flappy flop?) from flopping too much I guess.

Here is the promised picture (ignore the coloured wires, which are from a battery charger).

Not exactly what I envisaged, but it looks like it's an afterthought designed to duct water safely away. I guess they found a situation where water accumulates, splashes or gets blasted in there with a pressure washer or drive-through car-wash and overflows the pollen filter. And a late enough afterthought that it's not on the older, published PET.

I haven't seen another example of something this kludgey on a 911 in a long time. Except of course for the 996, which is a rolling kludge ... : )
