Default smoke on start up

My car is 1 month old with 500 miles and for the first time today she smoked when I started her up engine cold. It happened twice today. Is this normal or a potential problem looming that I need to visit the dealer about.

Thanks in advance

Yea, normal. The design of the flat powerplant can allow for smoke on start-up. It makes for great conversation.

So will the nice big cloud I had today continue to happen everytime I start my car when cold?

No, only occasionally. Someone said to let it idle for a bit before shutting down to burn off any excess. Not to worry it's just the nature of the beast.

My neighbour, Bob R's house dissapears some mornings when I fire up the RS, but only out of the R/H tail pipe. The dealer service advisor tells me this is completely normal....I countered with if it's normal then when I bring the car in for service can you make it smoke from the left hand tail pipe as well.

I have been repairing and servicing Porsches of all flavours for 25 years and apart from a brief puff on start up IT IS NOT normal.

My 996 GT3 has never smoked and still never uses a drop of oil between changes.
The RS on the other hand has consumed 3 quarts in 5K miles.

I got oil the first time I fired it up upon receipt of delivery. Nothing since.

Strange. I get smoke but no oil consumption to speak of. My 996 GT3 didn't smoke. Obviously the design changes in the motor had this unfortunate side effect.

Since I have gotten prodigious amounts of smoke at times, I can only conclude that a small amount of oil can cause lots of smoke at startup. . . but that the smoke is not caused by blow-by (past the piston rings). That is, I would think I'd get lots of consumption as well if it was caused by blow by. So, all this smoke, which only seems to come at startup and not under load, is caused by residual oil getting past the valves. I know PAG lightene the valvetrain considerably to support an extra 200 rpm. . . I wonder if its something in the parts change contributing to this..

Do you also get a rattle for about 3 seconds?

Yea, the grinding rattle for a second or so. Not sure what that is but it's been talked about.

Got the smoke and the rattle at times. It seems the longer it sits, the more I get it. The rattle sounds like a chain grinding or something. At the dealers now. I'll update if they find anything wrong.
