I gotta agree with you on this.

but Nick I don't know why you persist in characterizing 911's having steep depreciation... a 2-year-old base 997 with 15K miles sells for $55K with modest options, 73% of it's original msrp of $75K. residuals if you look it up are on par with MB,Audi,BMW. Understandably those rose colored F-goggles may have clouded your analysis.

I'd like to see a chart of the depreciation for a 2007 Porsche vs. 2007 Ferrari:

at one year, each with 8k miles
at two years, each with 15k miles
at three years, each with 20k miles
etc....

Paul, your cherry picking prices. take a look here.

Also, 27% depreciation on a two year presumeably high end low volume sport car is steep. I do agree that the depreciation is on par with MB, Audi and BMW but they produce a hell of a lot more cars. Porsche's shouldn't be on par.

I also agree that my view is warped because of my experience with Ferrari. My experience with Porsche regarding resale has been abysmal. With all my Ferrari's, I have put a ton of miles on them and resold them for at least what I paid. My 2006 430 Spider, which I took delivery in Dec. 2005, now has 9000 miles. I have no doubt that when the replacement is introduced, hopefully next year, I will resell for at least what I paid for it if not more.

Now that is the way to enjoy sport car driving.

The problem with that graph would be the sample size for the Ferraris with that many miles. I don't know anyone who has driven theirs that much in such a short period. I think you'd struggle to find many 3 yr old Ferraris with more than 10K miles.

Nick sounds like an exception to this.

Porsche sells ~20,000 sports cars in the US annually.

Ferrari sells ~1,500 sports cars in the US annually.

Comapring the two is apples to oranges.

I have to give my props to Nick. The last porsche I sold (less than 8K miles) I took a bath in (embarressed to say how much)...and all the Ferrari guys I know are sitting pretty. That said, I would take Porsche common shares all day long as that company is a money making machine.

But, as the famous developer Mr. Zeckendorf said, better to be alive at 18% than dead at 7%...or something like that.

Make sure whoever is doing your graph also does one for maintenance costs for each over the same time/mileage...

Ferraris are much more mileage sensitive (relative to re-sale) than Porsches. Also, they are pretty sensitive to the end of the warranty period as well. The typical Ferrari gets <2000 miles on it in a year, and currently resale values for an '05 F430 with 2000 miles is north of sticker, even as people are taking delivery of MY07s.

Just heard from my dealer. They are getting 2 GT3s and 1 RS for '08. I'll find out tomorrow whether or not th RS is mine There is one guy in front of me for the RS, but the dealer wants the car to go to someone who's going to use it! So they want you to sign something saying you will keep the car for at least a year (no flipping!!!) So hopefully the guy in front of me was planning on doing that. BTW it's a July build!!

that number and the 120 for total GT3's quoted to my dealer may imply that only 15 more RS's are coming? that would really suck.....he was sure of that total number but was not sure what the base GT3/RS split would be...

i am actually very surprised that porsche limit the production so severely. i dont care either way, as my car will have way too much mileage to have any resale value (4k miles in 4 weeks), but just surprised.

maybe i should stop driving it, NOT.
