Oil? No. Definitely not, but it might be related to the leak.
You'll get black exhaust and dust on the bumper, but not oil.

Maybe his rear rotors were leaking on the rear bumper?

Any and all pancake flat six clam shell type blocks are suseptable to a RMS leak. Porsche even tried to lighten the counterbalaces on the crakshaft in the m97 to take the stress off this point after noticing that it happened less on lwfw equiped engines. It's the Achille's heel of the boxter motor gt1/m96/m97 they happen more commonly on m96 motors because there's more of them and they've been out for a long time. The much predicted grenading of m96 motors never happened, it's actually fairly bulletproof. There was quite a good technical read on this last yr on renntech.

That all sounded good until you wrote "boxter." : )

Anyhoot, the 964 split block is not susceptible. It's the alignment problems in the 996/997 Carrera wet sump engine in the alignment of the crank bearings with the case seals. I don't think Porsche ever raced the wet sump engine or offered it with a single mass flywheel. I'd enjoy learning more about 911 engines. Just a matter of time. I've been thinking about doing an engine building course just as an amateur hobbyist sort of thing.

I don't agree that the air cooled case didn't have rear main seal issues but they sure were nothing like the junk in the water cooled Boxster's and 996's. There were a small amount of faulty GT3 style rear main seals but it was again a very small amount of faulty ones. I learned about it from Henry at PMNA when running a cup car at the 24hr Daytona in 2004. I would assume that the flywheel seal AKA the rear main seal AKA the RMS is your problem. And yes, take it easy on mentioning the track time even though they know you well, really it comes down to what tires you ran on at the track but good luck proving that one.

I can't quite believe a five year old topic for the 996 and a fifteen year old topic for 964 has life in it.

Yes, the factory updated the design the 993 RMS several times with different grooves and springs and colors and whatever. But the design weakness of the 996/997 wet-sump Carrera engine is a completely different issue -- the alignment of the crank with the case.

Most (LUK, ZF-Sachs) double-mass flywheels contain a (silicon) grease that can leak out and spray the bellhousing. Its too thick to leak out onto the floor in a puddle 1' in diameter like a RMS but they can leak.

can anyone confirm that the LWFW is really available as an upgrade? if so, any ideas on how much it costs? i've asked my dealer to check, but with only 3 or 4 997 GT3's in this country, i'm afraid to think of the price! (there's only one Porsche dealer here)

Search other threads.
In short, from a dealer, which it's not an "upgrade" you can order from a catalogue, any dealer can order the few parts required and use their service hours estimation tool to quote the cost to replace a clutch. I'd expect the dealer to quote on eight hours. At $150, hour, that could be $1500. The parts are about $1000-1500 list price.

Talk about double speak. "Flywheel seal" by any other name is a Rear main. Funny.
