This sounds like one of the fastest depreciating Porches ever. Most options are pure profit and pure depreciation. The extra $$ is just skimming for those that "gotta have it now" but is not a reflection of any long-term value of the car. Considering how willing Porsche is to make a buck off anything, there's no way they'd stop producing them at those profit levels. Plus, they would look like a hero serving all those enthusiasts' desires with as many as they can sell. I guess not being able to spec it the way I'd want (a stripper) either doesn't help. I think you made the better choice.

And I think the 3.6 Turbo was pretty scarce.

The 968 Turbo RS (do I have the name right) was a bit of a catch.

Is anyone trying to really flip Porsches for profit? I agree, it's just a fool's game. A handful of idiots and gouging dealers don't make a market. But it's a useful way to build a short-list of dealers to avoid.

The local dealer I patronise walks a thin line: they sell all cars at MSRP or less (meaning they take the hit if "market" value isn't as good as hoped or as high as MSRP) but they don't set aside cars and gouge over MSRP for inflated "market" value (meaning they don't profiteer) but if a customer renegs, they do sell the car at market value.

I tend to accept their standpoint In other words, if I were a business manager and looked at my inventory with a unit that is trading at a given price (above or below the arbitrary MSRP) and let's say that "market" value is around $150K (regardless of the MSRP at $123K) that would be my asking price. I'd decide how long to hold that offer and the objective is a sale. Conversely, if the market was unappealing, I'd still rather sell that scruffy 928 (let's say) for a substantial loss than wait. As a business manager of a given retail market business, I'm not a speculator, I'm a trader in the open market.

Good point. One very rare model 10 years ago and I'm not sure those went up in value from day 1.

 

The non street legal 996 GT3 RS did very well and even though the 1993 RS America (the ones that were not heavily tracked) took an initial hit they are at orignal list or higher. The 1992 street leagl cup cars have gone up as well as the 1992 C4 cup cars. 1994 Turbo S has done quite nicely as well.

 

Albeit none as well as just solid conservative investing of the money would have done

Any way you cut it a $30K premium for any Porsche will be difficult to recover.

 

Original base MSRP on '93 RS America was $54,800.
There are (2) RS America advertised in current Panorama with asking prices of $42K and $37K (agreed- pretty modest depreciation for a 14 year-old car, but is anyone making $ on them??).... Geeked out even further-- the same $54.8K @ 5% simple interest compound ann. would now be $93K.



Only 38 examples of 1994 Turbo S were produced. The original MSRP on the '94 Turbo S was $167K! Did someone pay >$167K during '93 or since '93?

it's the $17K premium over the regular GT3!!!

You will see several 1993 RS America's in the 40K range but you will also see some in the 70K range with low miles.
What was the list on the 1997 Turbo S ?

What's a Carrera 4 cost over a regular Carrera?

Plus:

* wider track and said to be better geometry
* two piece wheel carriers all round
* CF wing
* dare I say sunroof delete?

Random stuff:
* "distinctive" paint options
* painted wheels
* resale exclusivity?
* top dog status for a couple of years.

I'm sure I can bolt and spray all of that onto the normal GT3 (even the wider body lines in the event of any "mishap.") The rear geometry will surely snug under the narrow body.

Is the RSR based on a wide body; is the Cup?

 

Back in 1993 there was more than one dealer offering a 10k discount on that MSRP.
