Default Michelin Pilot Sports Cup Tires -- Banned in US?

Just picked a copy of the new Porsche 911 World Mag (Issue 154) -- contains an excellent article on the GT3 RS (first drive) with a very favorable review. At the end of the article is a summary of all the "goodies" that we will not see here in the US. The article then states: "There's also talk that the Cup tyres I drool over may be disallowed by the time deliveries start, Porsche probably opting for the approved Pirelli P Zero Corsa set." Does this perhaps explain why some of the recent GT3 deliveries have had P Zeros? Have any GT3s been delivered in the US with MPSCs? Anyone have any info on this front?

They may have made the decision due to the fact it's an R compound tire and the fact that many people don't track the car, at least initally. P Zero Corsa are as well, so who knows......

The MPSC is DOT rated so it is a street legal tire. Given that the PS2 has been such a popular tire on the other most recent models I wonder why the decision to go more with Pirelli?

My guess is that their engineers have probably determined the Pirelli to work best against the setup and balance of the car.

My friend has MPSC's on his. It is not the same as the aftermarket MPSC's that are sold though. It has an "N" in the part number which means it was produced to Porsche's spec and not Michelin's. They do sell an aftermarket MPSC without the "N" which is the same tire that people use on the track. My thought is that Porsche would not make Michelin design and build a tire and then dump it right at the onset of use.

Dealer says that Porsche has always had a second supplier. We're probably seeing Pirellis on cars b/c (i) they committed to certain quantities of Pirellis and/or (ii) production by Michelin on the N spec MPSC hasn't ramped to meet demand.

As for the N spec MPSC, it's well documented that Porsche worked closely w/ the bulbous white fellow to tune the tire for street use on the GT3. I'm curious to find out just how tweaked for the street they are relative to the non N-spec tire.

Do you mean to tell me that GT-3's are being delivered without MPSC's? I expect my car in Feb and will be very upset if it doens't have MPSC's

My car, delivered yesterday, Jan 8, has MPSCs (which arrived slathered liberally with ArmorAll)!

Multiple reports already of the Pirellis on GT3s in the US. See for example MJones posts.

I'm guessing the N-spec "MPSC" found on the 997GT3 is to the MPSC what the P0 Corsa System is to the PZero Corsa - if that makes sense. Both are called R-comps by their respective manufacturers, but in reality are a little below R-comps in grip, but better in wet & cold weather. Both are as good as each other. There's a reason Porsche use these tires and not the PS2...
