Default GT3 look alikes...grrrr.

Hi all,

First post, been lurking around for quite some time just taking in all the great info on these forums. Something I've searched for but haven't found anything on are people's thoughts on the GT3 bumpers on regular 911s.

I've seen some 911s that look almost exactly like GT3s save for the dual exhausts in the back and the wheels. Criminy, I followed one the other day cause I thought it was a GT3 and it wasn't...It even had the GT3 rear spoiler and everything. I even saw on it on regular 911 at the local Porsche dealer.

I'm seriously contemplating a GT3 and find this very disconcerting...just curious as to how everybody feels...

Thanks!

Look at it this way: If you can detect a phony GT3, others can too. There's no way to stop poseurs from trying to replicate GT3 cachet for less bucks, but that's no reason to reject the real article.

The joy of owning a GT3 is (I hope - mine is currently "on the vessel") in the driving, and it'll take a lot of bucks to make an ersatz GT3 perform like a real one.

The fact that others choose the GT3 to emulate is testimony to the car's capability!

It isn't how the car looks; it's how it drives. There are people out there putting $K's or $10K's into Ferrari and Lambo knockoffs too; and after all that money, it'll still have been a bad idea. It's easier to build higher end Porsche knockoffs (excepting the C-GT) because the base platform is superficially similar; but the underlying mechanics is what makes the difference and it's pretty much always cheaper to start with the real thing (for recent vintages).

You have to get this car for yourself. You can carry this argument to anything in life: Knock-off Rolex, or Louis Vitton... Who cares!!
The car (the real GT3) is phenomenal in both appearance and performance. You should look at it as a compliment that people will go through the effort and expense to make their car look like yours. Not everyone has 110K+ to plunk down on a car.

Khaug:

My GT3 is at PDI in Charleston at the moment.

Hope to pick it up next Saturday. I live in NW Pennsylvania and the winter has been extremely mild so for and I hope to put some miles on it before the snow accumulates.

For regular Carrera you can get an aerokit option which makes the car look like GT3. What's so wrong with that?
Maybe the owner tracks it and wanted the aerodynamic performance from it, maybe he/she just likes the way aerokit looks (it looks very good). Same thing as someone putting carbon fiber package, black wheels, extra leather ot whatever enchantment people do.
Factory does it too, GT3 RS has decals on it, you think they "add" something to it besides looks?

I don't have an issue with someone buying a regular 997 and adding a factory aerokit. That's part of the GT3's appeal, it looks so good!

I do however have a major issue with people doing the above, rebadging it and trying to pass it on as a real GT3. That in my book is a poseur!

When I got my 2002 C2 from the dealer(Used) it had the kit with the Carrera badge. I then ordered a plate: GT3NOT
Do not live your life because of what other people do. Get the GT3

this is exactly why my RS will be orange....clones will be hard to match that. As far as the GT3 goes, White is what I am getting and clones of that are probably equally as unlikely...seems that not too many people will order up a white base 997 AFAIK. (coincidentally am attracted to the launch colors)

Not that I really give a damn what other people order; I just don't like being lumped in w/ poseurs.

Norm, why a GT3 if you can have an RS?

I need a daily (read: rain/dry) driver and instead of tricking out yet another base carrera; the GT3 will more than meet that need. It will also make for a nice rocket shuttle to the club races. (the RSR gets full transport/support by DeMan Motorsport) The RS is going to be a "fair weather" car only and tracked when possible. Hopefully, my wife can bring the GT3 and I will take the RS to the track and split track time b/w them when not racing.

I like the look of the headers compaired to the 996 GT3's exhaust manifold

There is nothing wrong with "Turbo Look" and "GT3 Aerokit" cars as long as they are badged correctly. Porsche has been selling these versions for a long time.
