Funny you mentioned you like the drive of the 6 more than your 7.2. I have a very well setup 6gt3 but nowhere as awesome as Scott's (mine's still 3.6 but has full suspension, lwfw, 3.89r&p, diff and some other cup car bits). It makes all my previous 997s (7.1gt3, 3.6rs, 3.8rs, SW3.9) all feel civilized in comparison. The mods are a big contributing factor and then having it properly setup makes the 6gt3 be on another level as far as the liveliness, feedback and overall drive experience. Recently just sold my 7.1 (same car 2nd time around in a span of 9 yrs) and keeping the 6.

Posted these articles in the reviews section in the stickies. Very good GT3 vs GT3 RS reviews. Unfortunately don’t have the second part of the Chris Harris .1 article.

These are good, too. Crappy quality though.

The value proposition is big reason I have a 996. I do miss the look of my old 997.1. IMHO, that generation gt3 is one of the best looking 911's ever made. There is not a bad angle on that car, and the proportions are just perfect. I love the 3.9, but if I'm honest, it does make the car a bit less streetable (especially with my cup exhuast). The thing is loud, raucous, lopey, and needs the revs to really extract the bes out of it (kind of lock the stock 996 3.6 too). The variocam plus and variable length intake runner and exhaust length (via valves) of the 997 generation cars really does make the 997 car more enjoyable on the street (when you are not absolutely hooning it around).

I did my build pre crazy-inflation, and as I've noted, the pistons were graciously gifted to me by a rennlister who upgraded to the 4.1 and had the old pistons just lying around. But even then I was closing in on $30k (included lots of ancillaries like oil pump, tensioners, etc...). Sharkwerks did not do my build, but one of its affiliated builders (John Bray at Evospec) did, and they used the sharkwerks special cams (for which Evospec is actually the provider of the cams for the sharkwerks builds). Tuning was also through Evoms (like the sharkwerks cars). Add the pistons and today's prices, and I'd bet it would be close to 40k. Then start adding in stuff like a clutch kit (4.0 to hold the increased power), and, well, you get the idea. For me this path was better and cheaper than just buying a new car. But only because I was really sure my car would never really be "collectible" given its accident history and mileage, and was pretty sure I would be keeping the car for decades and piling on lots of track/street miles. If you are pretty certain your car will be a keeper for a loooooong time, this route actually makes some sense. If you are on the fence about long-term ownership of the car, probably better, more reversible ways to spend the money.

I will also add that I definitely made a mistake trying to save some money by keeping the stock 6th. I wish it was a touch longer for freeway cruising, so I'm going to go back in and replace that soon most likely. Should have done it all at once, but as you all know, these tranny builds can almost add up faster than the engine builds! May even spec a slightly taller first. It feels really short, especially now that I don't really need it given the additional hp and torque of the 3.9.

I certainly do not have the skills and I probably do not drive hard enough to notice a significant difference in the two cars. That being said, I love my RS but if I know what I know now and I was in the market for a 997 car, I'd probably save the money and get a 997 GT3. Then, I'd use the money I'd save to get the LW Flywheel, upgrade the diff, pin coolant lines (if necessary), ect. to make the car as awesome as it can be.
Love this. After playing with 991.1 3RS, manual 991.2 GT3, I find myself with 4x 997 GT cars in the garage. I love them all for different reasons.

For the price difference, there's not much value in the driving experience between the 997.2 GT3 vs RS. RS evokes emotion and has some incremental gains. Even for some tracks, I would bet gearing and extra aero may not make an RS always faster.

997.2 GT3 is subtle and elegant with narrow body. 997.2 3RS is a classic to me, best manual driver's car for feel, but mechanical chatter of LWFW makes it a poor daily.

There are no bad choices here.

I have driven a 997.1 GT3 RS and been in the Instructor Group but in the passenger seat of 997.2 GT3 RS and even the GT3 Cup Car, that was an amazing experience.

I love the RS and if I could afford one I would get the 997.1 RS, its not that much better then the 997.1 GT3 but it looks amazing and is sill a very good car to drive on the street and the track.

The 997.2 GT3 is a whole different animal. If I would consider a 997.2 GT3 I am 100% certain it would be a 997.2 GT3 not a 997.2 GT3 RS.

The 997.2 GT3 is a great street/track car. The 997.2 GT3 RS is a great Track Car, not a very good street car, its too Race Car like if that makes sense.
Makes perfect sense. After my 997.1 3RS, I felt the 997.2 GT3 was an absolutely better car. I grab keys to the 997.2 GT3 often even when a 997.2 3RS and a 997?2 3RS 4.1L are in the garage, not because I care about mileage nor depreciation.

Also, my 997 GT3 has the single mass flywheel and the RS pulley. I love this car and it will go with me to the grave.
Love seeing owners excited about the 997.2 GT3. Seems like many also know what to expect from marginal gains at disproportionate costs for the RS. To each, his/her own.

I had been looking half heartedly at 997.2's when a nice one came up here on RL back in 2010. Before I knew it, someone jumped on it and bought it. I recognized the buyer was in the same city I was living in at the time so I PM'd him and asked for a ride when he got the car. Never even been in a GT3 to that point. When the car arrived, he reached out and said let's go for a drive. I knew in the first 5 mins the car was special. 15 mins later, we pulled over and he threw me the keys. A complete stranger I met on a Porsche board threw me the keys to his new 6 figure car. Slipped in the seat, twisted the key and that drive forever changed my life. I have been addicted to GT cars and particularly 997 GT cars ever since. The second part of the equation was that the owner and I became close friends and have shared driving experiences ever since. I owe you one @SSTHO . You've ruined me
Love this story. Cars are one thing, but sharing automotive passions and building lifelong friendships is priceless. Thank you for all of our driving adventures, diving into 997 GT2 s and great track times with the dual Meteor Grey 997.2 GT3 at Sonoma! I'll always pay it forward when many have done the same for me. Thank you Chris! Still have those Sea to Sky highway shots when we first took out the car. Helps when we are walking distance from each other too! Lol. Great times, my friend. :-D

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...n-7-1-gt3.html

for the folks discussing 3.89 R&P without 6th … I had just done a write up on it, chart and cost.

would be a nice upgrade for those slower corners at the track to not have a long dragged out 3rd gear

I haven’t driven an RS of any flavor, but maybe someone that has owned both a GT3 and RS can chime in, but if you want an RS, get an RS, but otherwise you should be able to get a large portion of the driving experience in a normal 997 GT3. I wouldn’t settle if I was you, but if you’re simply looking for that amazing driving experience, clutch, shifter, steering and sound, the normal GT3 will deliver.

When you’re ready to buy, the GT3 cars for sale thread is a great place to look. Or any of the reputable independent Porsche dealers.
yea I’ve had both and I’ve said it before in other threads… I think the non-RS .2 gt3 is the best balance of everything you’d want… it’s def not settling.

I was spoiled because the PCCB, the full leather smell, dynamic lights, back lit kick panel and fully adjustable sofa and Dundon headers, all made it feel very super car to me.

I have no doubt I’ll regret selling it when my elbow and my knee give out and my wanna be race car driver days are over.

RS is RS, but with that being said many (not all) bought in when a 997.2 RS could be had for $120k to $160k all day long. I have a friend who picked one up in early COVID times for what I paid for my .1 non RS post-COVID. Do yourself a favor and don't look at older BaT results, it will make you ill

I'm sure some would have still bought in at the current $300k+ asking prices but I suspect more than a handful may have gone a different direction.

Can't go wrong with any 997 GT product.

997 GT3 is the sweet spot. But if you can afford the RS version then it's a must have IMO.

You really don’t need it on the 997.1, but some say you may need it on the .2s.
