Default RS 3.8 to RS 4.0 Suspension Upgrade

Hey Guys,

So this is just my first post for my next project I'm working inspired by this thread below, Mooty's enthusiasm for the 4.0 suspension and my aging shocks.

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...ispreloading=1

Summary: $4500 parts (REAR)

997 333 053 90 Shock Absorber
900 378 138 01 Hex-Head Bolt M12 x 1.5 x 70
999 084 445 01 Lock Nut M12 x 1,5
997 333 533 80 Main Coil Spring
996 343 505 00 Bellows
996 333 551 90 Support Discontinued (new old stock)
999 025 271 02 Washer
997 333 105 01 Supporting Bumper/Coil
999 084 050 02 Hex Nut Replaced w/WHT-008-558
900 380 008 01 Hex Nut
997 333 511 80 Intermediate Ring
997 333 537 82 Second Coil Spring

Summary: $4300 parts (FRONT)
997 343 043 95 Damper
997 343 531 81 Spring

Comment 1 - I already have DSC and yes the .2 platform is bolt on, there are a few nuances in the .1 that were mentioned in the other thread
Comment 2 - Yes when you do this there is a slight difference in how the DSC will react (sport mode OFF) because of the spring rate, (sport mode ON) its only better... but Tom@TPC Racing has a tune I'm told
Comment 3 - The spring rate is probably somehow tied to the slight increase in rear wing rake and the new wing tips? fun future project like Elliot is doing
Comment 4 - There is a little more cost to doing this to a regular GT3 as there are a few more important part differences like the rear sway bar
Question 1 - The Second Coil Spring is such a small part why the hell is it $700, others have used alternatives here... ideas?

For those who are track guys this is indeed not money well spent, but I'm sticking to "mostly road with some track". In the past I had planned on potentially going with DSC Sport Active 997 RT but I've watched nearly everyone remove it from their car for "resell", this upgrade feels more natural.

I'm partial to Porsche OE all the way around and I'll post up my efforts as always.

Thanks for sharing all these P/Ns. Sounds like a fun project. One that I could get behind.
  • Are these list prices or already discounted?
  • Shock P/N with or without FAL? I do think retaining FAL is one of the largest pros to this kinda setup.
  • Also curious as to why the rear has so many parts changed compared to the front.

these are sunset Porsche parts prices which are usually 15-20% off, a few of the parts arnt on there like the rubber gasket discontinued on the rear which I found on OEMparts

this is with FAL, one part number swap

i was curious also but I figured it just needed the least amount of tweaking and I’m guessing the dive planes only just reenforce the little changes in spring rate

It's pretty close pricing-wise to the Tractive R&T kit. It's more expensive if you have DSC already and less expensive if you need everything. But as you stated a few negative sentiments out there.

Yea the Tractive is the one I think is the most functional for me and WAS planning on getting it eventually although the Ohlins TTX seem to have won the hearts and minds of speed demons. I just know if it’s a 4.0 RS part I’ll never be tempted to mess with it again and be happy.

Not going to the lie, the gold on the Ohlins always made me giddy whenever I’d pull a wheel off my car. They were phenomenal on my 964, and I have trouble wrapping my head around going any other route if I were to upgrade now. I’m very curious to hear more about the 4.0 upgrade though, this is honestly the first I had even heard the suspension was different than the regular RS

With the rear can you not just re use the parts and just do the shocks and springs ?

The part number for the front shocks you said is with fal, 1220 a piece and the springs a pair for 800.(sunset)

but you lose the FAL. On a non FAL car or a 997.1 it would be the way to go.

Interesting project. Are your factory dampers tired? Or just looking for an “upgrade”?

Same, Ohlins rode like a dream and were stiff when I needed. If I ever swap out I couldn't care less about PASM and would do Ohlins for sure.

If only ohlins had a solution which retained FAL that would be amazing. I do not want to lose my FAL.

I think if I had FAL I would be seriously torn. Fortunately, I guess it's not an issue for me without it.
