I always wondered why they put in the rear wheel steering in the 991 and 992 GT cars? Was it because they the 991 and 992 bodies are so much bigger than the 996 & 997?

Not really. Despite being bigger than the 997, it's still a small car. RWS make the car more stable when turning at speed so the car can carry more speed on turns. The downside is that it makes the car feel more mid engined and the steering can feel synthetic. Good for lap times but I skipped it on my 992 road car.
