This is the droid I’m looking for: DD 2010 997.2 GT3
After entertaining a thought of selling it that went sideways quickly, I’m going to keep and cherish the car.
I spent the last three weeks driving my wife’s hand me down 991.2 GT3 when she got a Taycan Turbo and I’ve been sorely disappointed in it compared to the 997.2.
I was trying to explain it to my racer friend.
A 997.2 GT3 is like a dance partner. You work together and do things together. It’s seamless.
A 991.2 GT3 takes suggestions but decides what it wants to do and asks “is this really what you wanted?”
You can feel the electronic interface between the driver and the car in the 991s.
With emission standards, I really don’t think they’ll ever make them like this again.
So I’ve decided that instead of finding someone else to give it a forever home, it’s actually the droid I have been looking for.
This will be a journal to document making it from an autocross car to a minty garage queen for celebrating driving enjoyment.
First step: heat gun and remove decals.
Next up will be getting quotes for removing yellowing clear bra and rear vinyl… possibly getting the car wrapped in another color.
Metallic blue is a candidate:
Daughter would like it to be pink… not sure I can swing that.
She would probably like the Sooki S2k…

Missing rear brake duct from autocrossing and hitting cones. Happened with such frequency that I’ve replaced a few over the years.
It’s an easy fix. Ordered another one.

Talked to a good buddy
Good buddy from racing days now is a manager at a high end detail / auto body shop.
He knows all the paint mil requirements and paint correction stuff I don’t.
He’s going to oversee the paint restoration. They have an original RS they’re working on currently.
They can take the current clear bra and PPF off no problem.

Good choice In keeping the car and I share your feelings about the 997.2 vs 991.2. I have a feeling you documenting the rejuvenation here is going to be like a spear through the hearts of some of the tire kickers in the 997 gt3 for sale thread who wanted this car but got cold feet over some small imperfections. This car can be easily brought back to stock, superb condition.

@GlenGT3 It’s really an awesome build sheet and should clean up nicely! I have the resources to make it minty and daily drive the 991.2 as an appliance car and save this for special occasions.
I figure if I have the engine dropped for pinning and welding, I can get the cam angle 3.5* addressed at the same time.

Tarett rear blade bar
The rear sway on the car is a bladed bar.
I might pick up an OEM bar but at this point I can’t see myself going back to that.
The end links are slightly bent which isn’t a big deal and it’s a $20 McMaster Carr part that takes 15 min to replace. Heim joint swaybars end links are common in autocross.
Will replace them too, in order to make things minty.
Sent a message out to the company to see if they can send me part numbers or allow purchase of the units.

Already responses
Tarett was great and responded to my email within 15 minutes.
Yes, can easily replace the lower heim joints.
I have installed swaybars in the past numerous times and had a 2 post lift in my garage. I gave it to my buddy when I got out of racing but I can run over and use it anytime.
My neighbor owns an independent German auto repair shop and we will talk about pinning and camshaft deviation mitigation.
He said he has a car at the shop with a severe deviation angle issue so it’s looking promising to have it addressed.

Been doing it wrong
Since we retired the 997 from autocross in about 2014, it was in climate controlled storage.
I would swap it summer to winter with a GTR on snow tires.
The rear seats made it useful for baby transport when my daughter was young.
I put about 1-2k miles on per year because work is close to home.
Meanwhile, my wife’s 991.2 sat virtually unused.
With the way emissions and electronics are going it turns out the 991.2 is the easily replaceable one while the 997 is irreplaceable.
Driving the 991.2 for the past three weeks… it’s a better appliance car.
So it makes sense to pretty up the 997 and cherish it. This whole potential sale thing was the motivation I needed to get off my *** and put some work into the car.
I have the next week off work, so looking to make some headway into the project. It’s been years since I wrenched on cars for hobbies and it’s kind of refreshing.
