Default Solid Links and Creaking

HI, I purchased a 997.2 GT3 earlier this year and it had the following GMG suspension parts installed:
  • Thrust arm bushings, front and rear – GMG
  • Dog bone rear upper control arms – GMG
  • Toe link kit, half, front w bump steer – GMG
  • Toe link kit, full, rear w bump steer – GMG

Ever since purchase the car has made a slight clunk and a creaking when under moderate cornering (lateral acceleration related). Is this normal for these links or is it indicative of a rebuild being required? If so which links do people typically see wearing out first?

Thanks

Which side? Or both? Front, or rear? Have you pulled your wheels and checked for play? Do you have floating rotors? Lots of questions.

I haven't had a chance to put it up in the air to check for play. I do have floating rotors (StopTech Trophy Kit) that clunk under braking from time to time.
I get creaking regardless of left or right turns.
I was hoping to get this all done at the same time when I swap the shocks back to stock so I would only need to align and corner balance once.

Ok, so it's not the floating rotors. I would start by pulling the wheel and looking for any play.

I would check tophats/struts as well. Are you hearing creaking from all 4 corners?

Well I gave it the old FSAE toe and camber stiffness test and didn't see any obvious movement. I did maybe hear a click on the left rear, but it was hard to tell if it was due to the car rolling or the parking brake mechanism. I've really got to get the car in the air soon. Don't know why I didn't try this earlier.

smceo: I believe it is coming from the rear. The current coilovers do have some leaks in at the canister connection so I could imagine that being a cause as well. I was trying to see if this creaking is common on new solid links or not.

Make sure the wheel weights are not making contact with your brake ducts (if you have them installed), that can produce a clicking noise as well. Bigger issue if you're running 18" wheels.

Well I had the rod ends replaced and the shocks swapped back to the OEM ones. The creaking appears to be gone!
For future reference here are the Rod End PN's for the GMG kit:

FK Rod ENd:JM10T Rodend, RIGHT HAND qty 4

JML10T Rodend, LEFT HAND qty 8

JFL10T-F1 Female Rodend, LEFT HAND - F1 fit qty 2

This is for front and rear toe link/bumpsteer kits and rear UCA.

Hi all,

Only 2 conditions for a clunk - rod ends junk and something loose.

Not trying to be a jerk here, but Porsche uses Hershmann for their rod ends, cost 2-3x for a reason...

Thanks Ray, do you have an interchange chart for the FK to Hershmann rod ends? I've never used them before.

You would be interested in the 'Motorsports' version of their bearings. Not much to the interchange, there is thread size and direction and hole diameter.

Pretty sure that Deamonspeed carries or can get them also there is a US rep for Hirschmann. Be prepared for sticker shock!

I figure I should update this thread. I got rid of the clunking by breaking and re torquing all the roll bar bolts. I think the strut tower bolts had either loosened or were not torqued to the right spec (service manual says 34ft-lbs, GMG says 40ft-lbs). The service manual does say to check and re torque the bolts if there is a roll bar installed after driving sometime.

I think the creaking is still there (it all came back after ~700 miles of driving). I'll try and put the car in the air and double check all the suspension torques and sway bar end links etc. I'll try and lubricate the sway bar bushings to see if that makes an impact as well.

I would suggest that these cars are old enough and driven enough that a complete nut and bolt - Check the torque on all fasteners, would have some value.

I’m hearing some creaking in the cabin which I suspect are loose fasteners on my roll bar. Will have to get this inspected and retorqued correctly when I remove the roll bar to replace my 3rd brake light (a few of the bulbs are out).
