Are you talking about the bearing sound at the beginning?

My car makes that noise but it goes away when I press the clutch. hehe.

If it's one of the pulleys, you're going to have to isolate it as any one of those can be making that noise. Get a stethescope and give it another listen

Well, if you have an RS with a single mass flywheel, it's not quiet. Press in the clutch and the sound goes away.

However, after listening to your sound over and over, it does sound like a pulley is on it's way out. You need to isolate the sound to find out which pulley it is.

That is not a LWF sound, sounds like either a bearing or a something rubbing.

I'm quite certain that it is the PAS pump.
Nothing really changes when turning the wheel, but sounds like a shaft or bearing going out.

What would the way forward be here? I have a three day event on the Nordschleife in a few weeks, with the car booked for a service just before. Fairly sure there won't be time for several extra hours work in their schedule though.

Is PAS the power steering pump?

I would confirm that this is indeed the problem and then have it repaired while being serviced. Not a complicated or time consuming process. Folks have been using electric pumps, but that would be a project.

One way of verifying is to use a stethoscope or equivalent and you will very clearly hear bearing noise.

Thanks Ray. Exactly what I did. Grinding noise was by far the loudest on the parts closest to the PAS pump

The concern would be if the pump failed or seized while on the track, you would lose your serpentine belt, which would make for an annoying day.

Although the pumps are not cheap, it is a relatively easy fix, easily done in a driveway / garage.
