Tires are so cheap, why risk it? You said they were aging out anyway. What's the point of trying to get a few extra miles out of them. You're risking an accident in a $100k+ car in order to literally get a few dollars worth of mileage out of old tires.
If you found yourself away from home and realized the cords were showing then of course, by all means drive carefully and get home. There's a 99% chance they will be fine. But to go out for fun drives knowing the tires are compromised makes little sense to me.

Uncle!!

At 9 am this morning I said I was parking it waiting on the new tires. To be clear, when I was trying to get the tires to last the summer, no cords were showing. Once I realized the cords were showing, I ordered new tires. The problem is thy won't be here for a week and I had a drive planned for the weekend. My post was not about stretching the life of the tire, it's about not missing a scheduled drive I was looking forward to. No worries, there will be other drives.

You call a local Porsche dealer to see if they have new tires in stock? They might not be the brand/model you want, but it could be a quick (and safe) fix.

For Columbus Ohio, I would check the north end wrench first, and see if they will do it. Auto Assets Powel would be another option.

The more spirited the drive is in a straight line, the more likely he will be to fail the tires. Ironically if the car was driven hard in corners without hard acceleration or straight line braking, he could use up some of the rubber that is left on the tread. The alignment looks like its set for sport driving, but the tire wear tells me it spends more time on the highway than being flogged. If I'm lucky I wear my rears out at about the same time, but the outer edge goes away from autocross, the inner edge goes away on the highway, and the middle is somewhat of a combination. Personally I wouldn't take my GT3 out for a drive that wasn't an emergency or trip to service on that rubber.

Interesting! I bought the car last August. I noticed the insides of the rears were worn more than than the outsides when I bought it. I have since put on 3600 miles including one track weekend at Mid Ohio. I plan to do 2-3 track weekends a year so I'm not sure how to approach the alignment.

I assume it was a moderate drive but it was with a group I have not gone out with. All this is moot since the drive was canceled because of weather. I was kind of with you RAudi and realized I would need to take it easy but I decided to wait on the tires after all. Tires are due in Monday or Tuesday
