my first 911

Found this when changing the transmission oil. I ordered new tires but they wont be in until next week. I had a 100 mile drive planned for this weekend. Assuming it's dry, thoughts?

I wouldn't drive it. so much risk. I used to run RA1 and NT01 to the cords when i used to have the M3 on the track, but once they corded you chucked them. Too much risk pushing them further. One blowout at speed could cause a lot of damage.

If the 100 mile drive were to go get the new tires & you were going to drive like Grandma to get there,... then sure.

But if your 100 mile drive is going to be a spirited one on twisties pushing the limits,... well then, I think you can tell where I'm going with my response. Don't take the chance.

Found this... That would apply to something like a nail in the tire not wear to the cords...

Reminds me when I was on a 5k motorcycle trip with a couple of buddies. Third day of riding one guy asks me to take a look at his rear tire. Tire was pretty worn. I asked him how many miles were on it. He had no idea. Three days later the bike spent half a day in the shop getting new tires... This was after riding about a 100 miles at slow speeds with cords showing (returning to the US from CA).

Has it been that way a while? If the wear showed up suddenly it could be because of alignment and could go from bad to worse quickly. My 991 was out of whack like that.

my first 911

I bought the car in August and notice the unusual wear pattern early in my ownership. I've put 3600 miles on it including one track weekend. The tires are aging out anyway but I was hoping to get through the summer before replacing them. New tires ordered, I will park it in the meantime. Looks like I need an alignment as well. Any recommendations in Columbus Ohio?

even with just the normal (factory) negative camber in the rear, the tires can & will wear like that. So you may not "need" the alignment,... but since you just bought the car, you probably did not receive a alignment printout from the previous owner showing where the car is currently aligned (which may be reason enough to spend the $$ & have your alignment checked).

... just saying don't be surprised if your alignment is currently within factory spec. (if the PO had tracked the car & set it up to his/her own taste, then all bets are off on my comments).

I would just dismount them. Flip. Remount. They are good for another 5,000 miles with your current alignment.
