Default Elliot's 7.2GT3RS Journal

Decided to dedicate a thread to my ownership of a 997.2 GT3 RS. It has been my long time favorite car(beside a 4.0) and I've finally acquired it in 2021. My name is Elliot and I'm located in Seattle WA. I picked up a 2011 GT3 RS White/Red. It's by no means mint condition. But it fit my budget and I will restore/modify over time. Heres the build sheet: VinAnalytics Link I've been lurking this 997 GT2/GT3 forms for a long time and am thankful for all the good information on here. My previous car was a 2018 BRZ tS. so this is quite the step up.

Below are my goals for this car.
  • Keep it
  • Drive it
  • Track it
  • Mod it

Some photos of the car:

My first failure with the 997.2. I went and bought a set of LED side markers from FVD. FVD Product link This was before I realized that the RS has the fender extenders and that although they clip into the car they don't match the lines at all. Lucky FVD provided great customer service even at my mistake and let me return the items. They also didn't seem to be plug and play for the RS. But again maybe im just an idiot. I believe these would work just fine for a normal GT3.

My second adventure. I really love the 997.2 LED taillights. But I hate the fact that they used a halogen bulb for the reverse lights. So I went ahead and replaced the Halogen reverse bulb with an LED Unit. Note these bulbs are monitored by the canbus system and thus you need to make sure you are getting an LED that wont trigger a canbus error. I went with these units from amazon and I haven't got any errors and they produce a nice white reverse light.
Error Free Reverse LED bulbs Error Free Reverse LED bulbs
Install was pretty easy. Remove the taillights from the car then open up the taillights by removing all 7 torx screws. Then swap in the LED unit where the halogen unit is. I also purchased new seals for the taillights since I was opening them up. you can find those kits here: https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/pq66974.html Of course I dropped one of the screws to the taillight into the bumper thus had to learn how to remove the bumper. Which is a bit tricker on the RS since there isn't much space around the wheel well. I cant remove the CL wheels yet as I don't have proper tooling. I instead jacked up the car which gave me enough room to remove the screw in the rear wheel well.

Bumper off(little dirty back there too lol):

Went ahead and installed the 991 LED License plate lights. They are plug and play which is nice.

Also took a day trip down to Portland Oregon in the RS. First longer drive with the car. Boy it was fun. I do really need to get my NMAuto carplay unit installed. The bucket seats didn't beat me up for a total of 6 hours of driving in the day.
I also ordered a set of PDLS head lights as I prefer the aesthetic of the dual projector. so that will be a fun project.

Congrats! I love the goals you listed in the first post (as long as the mods are performance focused ). Enjoy!

There will be some cosmetic mods like the LEDs above.

So I thought something was wrong with my car because it was failing to fill up gas stations and prematurely triggering the auto stop. Did some googling and learned it's a common issue/Quirk for 996/997 and people recommend filling with pump upside down.

I haven’t had issues with the 997 but I CANNOT fill my 86 911 without turning the pump nozzle sideways. I have to turn it at the right angle otherwise it just doesn’t want to work

Interesting I wonder if you have the fuel adapter ring for your 997? There is a few Rennlist posts about the 997 having the fueling issue. I believe it is dependent on the type of handle/nozzle from the gas station. Certain stations always work and certain stations always cause issues for my 997 Which does not have the 997 fuel adapter ring.
