And oddly enough, I've found the 7.1 shifter to be ever so slightly smoother than the 7.2. But again that could just be the difference between individual examples I've owned/driven. I honestly don't know if there's any actual mechanics differences?

^^^ I haven't yet had the hrs/miles in mine to change the tranny fluids yet (997.2 non-RS),... but I can say with certainty that with my air-cooled 964 Turbo G50 trans (driven for 15 yrs now), I can definitely tell when I've waited too long to change the tranny oil.

.... I'll be doing my G97 trans oil this summer. I'll see if I can feel any difference. For the last 1.5 yrs of ownership it still feels great shifting (& that's coming from a guy whose 964 Turbo G50 trans shifting is very smooth,... as a street oriented Turbo is meant to be. So they are very different).

anyway,.... I second the motion.

I’ll say this: given the age and varying use/abuse these cars have endured, I have experienced significantly different gear-box feel from one 997 gt example to the next. Yes, they all are very mechanical and deliberate gearboxes, but some do feel like your rusted bolt-action comment (meaning they feel BAD) and others feel like a very mechanical but well functioning machine. YMMV, but 10-15years later and all types of variance in use/abuse/maintenance, the gearboxes are not commodities at this point (along with most every other system in the car). They can vary quite a bit. Some/most of these cars have been driven very very hard in comparison to your average toy. If yours feels like rusted-shut rifle or slow or however you describe it, I can show you an example that does not. Hopefully with the right TLC, you can get yours operating better.
Thanks for the advice. I hope I can improve the gearbox too. The only thing I've done so far is lubricate a couple of spots along the linkage. It helped reduce the effort to get into reverse, but that's about it. I just received two different MT oils to try, Redline and Motul 75w90. If one doesn't work, I'll try the other. Matt from Guard Transmission says they're a bit slicker than the Mobil offerings, so we'll see if that frees something up. The frustrating thing is that when the car is off and I row the gears, the gearbox does indeed feel perfect. But when the car is on and everything starts spinning, gear engagement feels dry and obstructive. Cheers.

People have their preferences. I'm not trying to step on yours, just trying to make sure people have other opinions available to them as well.
well, I don't find the gearbox too hard

I also don't mind the clutch, whether that be SF daily driving, or now in the mid-west...

go get a PDK

I'm glad you enjoy your car. But excommunicating Alain Prost seems a bit rash.

sure, they're very capable cars, I knew that going in

but after buying a GT4 last year, and only putting 40 miles on it before selling, I knew I wouldn't care for the larger, higher tech 991 and beyond cars

it just might be me, but whatevs...
Wow, tell us more?

Never one to mind exposing my face to the wind, who heck is Alain Prost? To cast a dark shadow on the RS transmission is like criticizing the gluten in an apple pie. It's an apple pie. What were you thinking?

Yes, tell us more. I'm almost 9500 miles in my CT and liking it, not loving it. But if you hit that point I'm at just after 40 miles then so be it. But you gotta give us some juice.
