Default GT3 3.6l Engine Rebuild in Progress - Updates

I’ve commenced my GT3 3.6l rebuild and thought I would share some updates.
Note the rebuild is being done as a preventative measure mostly, given continuing low oil pressure issues and suspected vario-cam issues.
She has had a tough life! Over 200 track events

I’m far from a mechanical expert so please be understanding!

Also, the rebuild is being done 3000m away by a specialist who has the required tools and experience, especially with restoring Cup car engines. My local workshop has used them multiple times before and is managing the process.

Cash flows are limited! -so not seeking to go wild, more just restore to factory specs, although it does seem an upgrade from 3.6 to 3.8 is modest cost and certainly good value for your dollar. Not much increase in HP but in torque?

Appreciate any input and also leads regards sourcing of engine parts, especially regards the update to 3.8
many thanks

Engine coming apart,
1. Cross over water pipe O-rings were weeping coolant (old).
2. Collapsed vario cam adjuster.

As mentioned above, I’m far from a mechanical expert!
-so please excuse the limited descriptions

Hi. If looking to capacity upgrades I suggest check out Capricorn’s 3.9 kit. Plenty of them running around on east coast of Aus and goes very well.
Will need a tune on oem computer

While the engine is out, get your coolant pipes welded or pinned if you haven't already done it. Also, replace all rubber hoses because those things are ten years old or more. That's a lot of hoses and a bit of money but it's easy to do when the engine is out.

3.8 or 3.9 will yield noticeable torque improvement.

Thanks to all re the valued input. Will certainly be welding the coolant pipe issue!

Have just had the news that the Pistons, liners and rods are all in good condition still..... so I have had a win there. So the 3.8 upgrade is off the table.

Although I am now looking to spend the money saved on a set of Cup S Cams. Apparently serious power increase.
Also replacing both of the Variocam actuators.

anyone have recommendations for suppliers of Cup S cams —the factory ones of course aren’t cheap! Thank you

Interested to learn why? Those are 250-300 a piece, so curieus why you replace them if they still work properly.

Tnx!

Cost per actuator is considerably higher for replacement.

Hey guys thanks for your responses and my apologies for the tardy reply.
Engine overhaul is getting there.... she is a keeper for me after owning for 12 years and hopefully another 15 more!

Bit the bullet and decided to upgrade the cams as the engine was opened up.
Turns out Cup S cams are actually NOT a correct fit for a road GT3 Engine, so we are using Schrick brand from Germany. These don’t require any modifications and makes sense as we are doing the full overhaul of the engine.
Car maybe a little bit lumpy now, but I’m more than willing to take any pain!

PS some further details on the engine upgrade outcomes.

Was fortunate the Pistons and liners were still in good condition so no need to replace. Hence used the dollars saved towards the cams upgrade.
Oil pump tested and okay so didn’t replace.

Replacing both of the variocam actuators as one had failed, -they are seriously not cheap!

Driving factors for the overhaul was the failure of that one actuator and oil pressure on the way down over the last year, -especially after heavy track use returning to the pits.

She has had a hard life over the 16 years. I estimate 150 odd track events, Plus multiple 3 day Rally events. Plus my daily driver, that’s why they are such awesome cars!

In addition to welding the coolant pipes, replace the 2 plastic coolant elbows that go to the oil cooler
with the metal one's from Sharkwerks.

Also the coolant expansion tank is easily replaced with engine out - over time they can develop cracks.
