My 964 came with a nice binder of all work performed and receipts totaling north of $35k, I have since put another $15-$20k in the car (haven’t totaled all receipts intentionally.........If I do the 3.8 conversion I plan to stop counting and pretend that I got the car for free.

he's toast.
you need a 3.4L EFI ITB motor
and stop messing around with deep dish 7" like boostedtoy, you need deep 6 to look right
I understand coil over is better than the torsion bars.

I'll stop there for now.

stage 2 later.

$$ add up. Perhaps makes the no-mods-required RS lineup more compelling as a 2nd/3rd street car.

My street cars have been stock except for tires/suspension (dial out understeer, etc.). Race cars (even historic) are where my development $$$ have gone.

The 964 is definitely boring in stock form.

and in my opinion it’s not one of those cars that you do “coilovers exhaust and remap and you are good”. engine out, port it, cams, lwf or go home.

i did that to my engine and now it’s geared too short with 964RS final gear lol

find a 964 with straight chassis then plan 5/6k for gbox and a nice 20 to 40k depending if you fancy a 3.8. Or budget 75+ for a 4.0, sky is the limit.

properly set up, the 964 is a hoot. When I stepped back on a stock 964 I realized how far ahead I went. Yet there is always something more that I’d like to do...

Sounds like a 6 figure endeavor. Just realized - Garage space is also an issue. Anyone see a spot to squeeze in a 964

Or sell the 991 then add it to the budget for a really genuine air cooled experience. Ilko is contemplating selling his 993RS conversion(with true RS bits and lightened to 2,700-2,800lbs) that is ready to drive and its a hoot. You can think about an 3.8L upgrade in that car at some point in the future.

Easy fix, remove that support beam and add a lift. I saw them do it on HGTV and it only took about 18 minutes. Piece of cake.

The only ones, not including unobtanium RS (like 964 3.8 RS or 993 GT2...):

997RS is pretty good stock.

It has a perfect amount of "edge" to it. All the older ones are soft by my standards....

Update - I'm coaching 2 soccer teams, got job stuff and have 2 PCars in the garage. Can't get rid of the 991 and definitely cant get rid of the RS. Given the time and $ commitment I'm putting the search on hold for 6 months. thanks to everyone for the advice. It will be applied in the future I assure you.

Agree on 7RS; I’d use it as a street driver as-is if no need for backseats and awd. For others, I can understand; hence, I tend to go street-registered race cars.

Family. Other pursuits/interests. Two hobby cars are first world. All good.

Let's end this discussion: a 89-91 928GT.
