Coincidence or there is truth to it?
I was able to enjoy the weekend and decided to do some magazine reading.
My attention was on the Total911 with a cover of a 996 gt3RS, 991.2 RS and my 7.2 RS. They were trying to compare the 3, what would be the all around RS. The reviewer choose the 3.8 7.2 RS.
Quote:
"......but its the Gen@ 997 GT3 RS that is the one I'd take home. Just comes down to a number of reasons: its fast enough and its modern, it has enough character to appeal to a broader spectrum of driving situations. Yes, the manual transmission plays its part in that, but its demonstrably not the clincher here."
Another publication for july GTPorsche caught my eye. With the comparison including the 2.7 RS to the 991.2 RS, 5 cars all in all, it would be tough for my lowly 7.2 RS to be the top all around pick among the modern RS. But it was again mentioned as a top all around RS next to maybe the benchmark 2.7 RS.
Quote:
" If I could take just one of these cars and spirit it away forever, I'd take a long hard look at the 997(2) before plumping for the 2.7 RS."
2 different reviewers choose the 997.2 RS.
Now that cant be coincidence.

All of the GT cars have their special traits. I like that they all sort of fit a little different niche or buyer. I had a 991 GT3 and loved until I drove a 997 RS. There are some things I miss on the 991 for sure. That said, as everybody continues to say the .2 is the best blend of all. So not a coincidence.

7.2 GT(RS) is my favorite in the all of GT3 lineup.
* Not too big, not too small
* Dope tail lights
* Unstable enough to make it fun and raw
* Limited in numbers unlike the newest GT3s
* Lacks the ugly 996 front look and sub par interior design

When reading a GT Porsche or Total 911 comparison, no matter which GT(s) we own, we’re all able to find a sentence convincing us we chose the best. They know it’s important to make everyone feel good...

Autocar also recently wrote about it: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/a...ing-997-gt3-rs
And just a couple of weeks ago Evo called it the best car of the past 20 years: http://www.evo.co.uk/awards/21451/ev...0-years-of-evo
Not a fluke. Might not have all the gizmos of the latest and greatest but it beats the new cars handily in the enjoyment department. And at the end of the day that's all that counts.

^ if only one and you intend to drive it.
if collecting, 4.0 >991rS
i think ppl ESPECIALLY journalist do not understand what ONE really means.
997 is a fun car , but some times i want it smooth so i can drink coffee. some times i am stuck in traffic before i get to the canyon road, and the track is moving at 10mph for 45 mins...
997 is not good in that situation.
if you will transport my 997 to the head of a fun run everytime then yes, 997 would be the car i keep.

Conversely, I'll be in a modern 991/981 a few times too many and think "this car is too easy, lacks any challenge and has no soul.....I should sell it and just stick with the old, fun stuff". Then I'll navigate rush hour, a conference call and a cup of coffee on my way to a driving event and think "I could sell my entire collection and just keep this one car.........it is a BRILLIANT piece of engineering to offer as much comfort and performance in one package.
Lesson 1: no 1 car hits all the spots.
Lesson 2: if TRULY only 1 car, the new stuff is a better Swiss Army knife than the old (and likely that continues)
Lesson 3: the masochistic cars, when you hit the sweet spot, cannot be beat for that split second in time. And that one second keeps some of us coming back for more even though the other 90% of the time they are PITA that 90% of the population would not even consider putting up with.
They both have their place and are like comparing apples and oranges in my mind. Just as comparing an early 911 and 997 are.
