Default Porsche Driving Experience (school)-Birmingham

Hi all,

For Christmas, wifey bought me the 2 day school in Alabama (MAR). Would love to hear anyone's experience with the school, etc.

I expect to learn a lot, though only 2 days. Anxious to hear others impressions.

Thanks,
David

I took the class 3 years ago and am taking it again in October, 2018. Probably the most fun learning experience I've had in a long time. The track is spectacular. You go all out in a variety of cars. 991 911, Cayman, Turbo Panamera, launch a 991 Turbo, etc. Instructors are top notch and actually have great personalities. After a few laps they group you based on experience and ability. They are constantly observing everyone and may move you around frequently depending on how you are progressing. I'm going in October because it can get REALLY hot and sticky down south. Air is on in the cars but once you get out, hot. You will absolutely love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loved it! Wife bought it for me for my birthday and quickly regretted it as I came home and bought a GT3 and started tracking!

Congrats. Very professionally run, first-class operation. Only caution is if you have more than a handful of track days under your belt you are likely to feel held back, as on the track you drive in a group and effectively go only as fast as the slowest person in your group. I had five track days before I went and was probably the most experienced, which wasn't much in the scheme of things, but more than anyone else there, so a big difference. The autocross is a blast, too.

I just bought it for my wife who’s only been a passenger on track.
Might as well get the best in the business to teach the basics and see if she will like it.

Call PSDS in advance and share your experience. They should be able to put you in the Master's class, if appropriate. Either way, what a terrific present!
Come back to Barber's for the PCA Alabama Region's 2018 HPDE events:

thanks for all the comments - I've never been on a track (for fear of liking it too much and I have an addictive personality) and I expect to learn a lot

does anyone know if they do anything on a wet skid pad?

Then you'll have a blast. I believe they do have a wet slip pad there, but I may be misremembering. There is one, of course, at PEC ATL.

Enjoy and please report back on your experience.

Fantastic experience !! I did the same class in 2012 and it started me on the path to HPDE's (slippery slope and expensive)! They do an exercise on a wet skid pad in a 911, was great fun and very educational. Barber is a great track and the instructors are even better. What is amazing is the ride with instructors in the Panamera on the figure eight, the laws of physics were seriously violated and the hot lap in the 911 turbo on the track. You feel like you are learning so much and then get humbled by the talent of the instructors in these two exercises. You will thoroughly enjoy the whole time, hotel and food are great as well! Makes me think about taking my wife as an excuse for a return visit.

I wore light weight T shirts, jeans and driving shoes. There was one segment with heel/toe driving.

I did the two day last year. Highly recommended. Skid pad, autocross, braking drills and laps. Instructors are all excellent (current or former racers). First class all the way. I want to go back.
