Cost of engine rebuild
I am trying to find how much would it cost to rebuild an engine with scored cylinder. How many did it? Is it cost effective? or many sold the car and bought newer models?
EDIT: This is for 997.1 engine with bore scoring problem. I sold that car and bought a 997.2 since then.

I think it really depends on the condition of your engine and what you want when you're done. Do you just need the cylinders re-sleeved and are fine with the performance of the rest of the engine? If so, Hartech in the UK. If you want to beef up the internals for performance gains and bigger displacement, now you're talking Flat6 or VisionMotorsports. Coming up on $25k for a dialed n 4.0L that will adress all the shortcomings fr track use.

You might be able to find a similar quality build he in the US. I think Vision has crate motors ready to go. Price depends on your core's quality.

Are there any cheaper options?

Do you track the car?
if you just need a street engine with a fixed cylinder,
it looks like you could probably get something done around $15k. I'm just basing this off of rough numbers I had bouncing around my head.
Where re are you located?
give vision a call. Their crate motor may be just the thing. It's essential a rebuilt to factory engine with updated cylinders.

I've done it and to do it properly it will not be cheap. I believe that is just part of the flat six world as you have a limited supply of competent builders.
Only you can say if it will be cost effective. I could have bought a new Carrera for what I have into my 997 and I'll share my reasoning. First I didn't want to own a bigger Carrera coming from 993s so I chose not to buy a 991. On my current car I have replaced the suspension, exhaust, rebuilt and repainted the calipers, installed a Pioneer head unit, installed new radiators and AC condensers and more. I know this car and didn't want to start over again with an unknown vehicle which would have been a turbo. On the rebuild I didn't hold back on the extras and gave the shop a green light to do what they felt was best. This will most likely be my last Carrera and I couldn't be happier with it. It drives like a dream and the mapping is much different than before. I don't look at as an invest but as a hobby that I enjoy. I hope my perspective helps and good luck in which ever route you take.

This is how I'm starting to feel about it. There's nothing special about my S but I know it's history and like you said, it's a hobby for me too. I'll never even get the money back I've put into it and that's before an engine rebuild.

Paid a visit to Duane (Vision Motorsports) recently while on vacation in SoCal. Any option with his shop whether trading in your motor on his off the shelf VM1 4.0 conversions or rebuilding your original motor is well north of $20K.
I've talked to reputable builders in both the US and Canada and the price to do it right is always around $20K give or take. Can it be done cheaper? Yes but IMHO opinion unless your really up to speed on the shortcomings of the M/96 M/97 and the correct methods to address them your treading into deep water without a life vest.
Talked with BAS (Hartech) earlier this year through several email exchanges. His pricing was a bit lower ($13-$15K quoted) on the basic 4.0 conversion but once you factor in overseas shipping and the drama associated with it your not to far ahead.

There's RND as well. They re-sleeve with Nikasil and update the IMS.

so, what's the deal here. Did you just buy this car and the ppi failed to reveal this issue? Did they do a bore scope? Some don't do it as a standard ppi and you have to pay extra for it.
If if that's the case, man I feel for you. What a terrible
situation. It would be super shady for the previous owner to pull this. I doubt you have much recourse, but it's very unfortunate.
Id call RND if your just looking for another engine with the upgraded nickie cylinders. Or you could ship it to Hartech and I think you could get it done for about 8k. But you have to pull the engine and ship it and then have someone put it back together. My info said about 3k for that. Plus shipping.
