Default Oil level in 2005 997.1

My 05 997.1 seems to be using too much oil. The dealer wants me to wait until I have driven 1000 miles to bring it back to check consumption, but after 650 miles, the indicator is showing only a level at the lowest bar, and that bar is flashing. I know it still has 7 or so quarts of oil (per the shop) but is it safe to drive until I hit 1000 miles? Thank you.

A flashing bar means add oil now. If you have consumed that much oil in 650 miles then I would not wait another 350 to add oil. It doesn't make much sense to request that you wait 1000 miles to "check consumption" when you have a gauge that tells you the consumption now. And that consumption is excessive.

I would call the dealer and ask them what they want you to do. I'd suscept they will ask you to bring it in and I agree not to dive it another 350 miles as is.

I just did a cannon ball run to Las Vegas and back at shall we say a fast pace for sustained periods of time. 997.1 burned zero oil or the bars/sending unit arent working.

0W40 Mobile one factory fill.

Mine seems to burn oil when I do a lot of stop and go traffic. Canyon roads and the like burn very little.

I just got my '05 C2 in November. In my first 1500 miles of driving, I have been down a total of 1 bar. That was burning a full tank worth of gas running errands and all short drives. All my other driving is long distance runs to cars and coffee's or Watkins Glen international each, 1 to 2.5 hours on the highway each way.

Agree with the other wise folks here, call the dealer. I think your consumption test is done.

My 05 997.1 seems to be using too much oil.
My brother-in-law had a '05 CPO Carrera C2 that used a quart every 400-500 miles. He went back and forth with the dealer over the cause, and cure, of the high consumption.

They finally had a Porsche tech rep get involved and he ended up getting a Porsche remanufactured engine; it was covered by the CPO warranty. The problem was caused by scored(?) cylinder walls.

He now uses virtually no oil between oil changes.

Translating the acceptable consumption spec from post 4 to quarts & miles, acceptable usage is going to be 1.585 qts / 620 miles. Each interval on the 997.1 oil gauge is 0.4L (0.42 quarts) so at the bottom line (3 segments down from the proper level, but not flashing) would mean you've consumed 0.42 x 3 = 1.26 quarts in the 620 miles. But with your light flashing, it means you're probably a bit lower than that - the question is how much lower. I fear that they're going to tell you that although your consumption isn't acceptable to many of us here, it is within Porsche's specification. It would be nice to know how many of these engines when using oil excessively continued to do so without eventually suffering a failure (bore scoring, low compression, etc) and continued to run fine for many tens of thousands of miles - my guess is probably not too many, but it's just a guess.

As others have said, call the dealer and see what they want you to do, but I would not run another 350 miles since at your current rate, that would put you about 2 quarts low by the time you take it back to them.

By chance, does your left tailpipe look sootier / dirtier than your right one?

This is good information, thank you.

I am in a similar situation, '09 C2S, bought last April (2016) with 23K miles, currently have 35K. Oil bar indicator starts flashing anywhere from 650 to 1k miles. Dealer started a consumption test June 1st, light the bar started flashing last Friday, but the add oil message has not come on. I contacted the dealer today to bring it back for it in for a check up (they put tape with date and miles over the oil cap). And yes, my left tip is darker than my right. Driving to Boston, from NY/LI next week, and I don't want/need any issues. They keep telling me this is normal, but every 3 to 5 weeks just doesn't seem right.

The gauge is really touchy. If on my garage floor which is virtually level, I'm at 1 bar up from the bottom, I'll be at the bottom bar if the car is parked on my driveway (extremely slight incline, car will roll back very slowly), and with bottom bar flashing when parked at my office, which appears to have the same incline as my driveway. All of this after sitting at at least 12 hrs.

These cars normally burn oil. It's says so in the manual. You should check the oil level with every fill up. Spirited driving burns more. I have scoring and burn a lot of oil. A nice Raby 4.0 is going to solve that problem.

if your burning a lot of oil and have carbon build up on the tailpipes, I would get the motor scoped.
