This was my theory as well. Let us know what the Physicist says.

And if the tread is flung outwards at speed, the surface area not under the weight of the car would expand more. This would counteract negative camber and create a larger contact patch?

We're just riffin' now!

OK, so I think I can put this issue to rest. I've attached pics of my tires. I went to a local mom and pop tire shop that has been in business for 46 years. he told me that the tire is designed that way in order to scrape the tire instead of damaging the wheel if you encounter a curb. He said in fact the tire can be trimmed a bit if that bevel gets a bit chewed up and can be cleaned up a bit. I forget what he called it but "rim" something. I then went online to try to see if I could recall what he called it and ran across this article about the Pilot 4s. The Michelin supplied photo matches what I have. So I guess for those who were so adamant that they were installed wrong and I should go back were incorrect. Good to know I'm good to go. Although a bit out of the norm looking all is OK.

...if you'd shown us a photo that looked like that one, we would have told you that it's Theron was aver feature for the edge of the tire to protrude out past the face of the rim, but it the one you showed us had a gap between the rim and the tire and that's not correctly installed.

Glad you're all set though.

For real?!? You posted a picture of a 12" wide wheel with the wrong size tires in the very first post, asked for help, the forum responds, and correctly called the issue. The problem here is not the diagnosis but the patient.

And for the uniformed, OEM lobsters the OP actually has installed are 11" wide with the proper sized tire.

If your tire is an appropriate width for the rim width you're running, then I think so. Take the load off the tire (you can leave it on the car) by jacking up that corner, then try to inflate the tire to around 60 psi and see if you can get the tire to pop out into the seating groove. Check both the inside and outside edges to know whether you should be achieving one pop or two pops. Then go the other side.

They look like different front and rears. Check the date code to see if they are same year

Thanks, Date codes all the same and you are correct, fronts are flush and actually only the left rear has the rim gap. I couldn't get a good look at right side previously as car was still in winter storage with only a few inches between right side of car and wall. Should be correct sizing for my wheels as they are identical size to the Michelin Pilot SS they replaced. So the left rear is not mounted correctly. Just sayin' the "rim protector strip" on the Michelins is far superior to that of the Pirellis even when they are correctly mounted. Back to the tire store on Tuesday for correct mount off left rear. Thanks for the help.

Ok, so in response to the original post (that used a pic from someone else's car with a totally different wheel/tire combination) the answer is YES, this was a "silly tire question." I too want a refund on this thread. :0
