Thinking about installing a DashCam
I was seriously looking at this one as well. How's the sound? I would like one that actually picked up the exhaust sound especially on some rally drives and maybe track events.
.I'll unmute it tomorrow and see how it is when I also test the snapshot capability.
FYI I also have the GPS mount so I get coordinated, but have the speed disabled, since I'm rarely following the rules there.
Not sure if someone mentioned this already. I found BlackVue a decent brand and I have the BlackVue dr650gw. Mine is 1 channel only and they have a 2-channel (back and front) model. It's about $200 I paid and I love the quality, the feature and the subtlety of the cam.
The nice thing with Vantrue is they been sending me notifications when firmware updates are available. Also remember that is you want the auto-time syncing or speed/location features you need to buy the GPS mount too... $22 as I last recall. It's fine without if those aren't important to you. I hope you like it as much as I do, it is pretty good bang for the buck.
I got an A119 last week for my 997.2S - chose that over the A119S for higher resolution and I don't drive the P-car much at night - and notices several things:
Peter
- Video is great (the best of our 3-different dash cam models)
- The unobtrusive nature of the wedge shape would be better (less obtrusive) in a car that has the black dots behind the rear view mirror. The camera is small and black, but would be better if the body above the lens were behind a less-clear windshield.
- For a 997.2, it really needs to be hard-wired because the cigarette lighter power outlets are not switched (and the USB port for the phone causes uneven video - not enough power?), so you need to unplug when you turn off the car, and plug in again when you start it (provided you remember). Mine is not yet hard wired but will be soon.

Just in case it helps someone evaluate using a dash cam as an autocross camera: I ran an autocross at COTA today with the VanTrue X2 as my dash cam. It was set for 1440p at 30fps. I think next time I'll switch it to 720p at 60 hz though so the turns are a little smoother. Here is a the video of one of the runs just so you can see what to expect if you take this route for your camera. It is probably similar for other cameras designed to work as general-purpose dash cams. I did end up turning off GPS speed recording though since the camera doesn't keep up the speed variations at all and it is just misleading.
And yes, I know, it wasn't a perfect run and unfortunately I didn't get in a perfect one today. Sorry for the disgrace, but I lost SS class with a 39.7 second time to a Alfa Romeo 4C by 0.852 seconds. He did have an advantage in tires though... he was running new RE-71R Extreme Performance Tires and I was on the old P-Zeros I'm just about to replace for feeling too slippery. Yeah, that must have been it!
I have new P4S's sitting in the garage awaiting my new wheels, but part of me is considering getting some street legal "track" tires mounted on my existing wheels just for use on autocross days. I hate to lose.
cas1337 was there too running in novice class as got some really good times too. Before long he'll be going head-to-head with me in SS class too!

Depends on you budget.
If you have nice budget than i recommend you to go with > BlackVue Wi-Fi DR750GW or THINKWARE X500D.
If you are looking for dash cams under 200$ then you should go with Nextbase 512GW or Z-Edge Z3 dash cam.
Personally, i'm using Z-Edge Z3 dash cam which is very cool and affordable dash cam

I installed one in my wife's car and it drained the battery. It just chipped away at the charge until one morning it wouldn't start. Then she had to take the 997 to drop the kids off at school.
