997.1 DME report - opinion please
I have finally found a local car with the options I have been looking for. Sent it in for a PPI at the local dealer and came back with what I thought was a bad DME report. Service technician says not bad, friend with tuning shop says not good. My emotions are saying I love the car, but my logic says keep looking there are better driven cars to buy. Here are the numbers. Can you please respond with your opinion.? I have been looking for 997.1 manual Carrera S or a 997.2 base, under 50K miles & $.
Number of ignitions at speed:
Range 1 - 5343
Range 2 - 1197
Range 3 - 585
Range 4 - 266
Range 5 - 6
Range 6 - 0
Operating Hours at overspeed
Range
1- 1396 h
2 - 1396 h
3 - 1288 h
4 - 24 h
5 - 24 h
6 -0
Total Hours 1464
Car = 2007 Carrera S with 43k miles, power kit, manual, sports chrono $50k

A few 4s and 5s from over 1400 uneventful hours ago? Run fast and far before it explodes and takes out your family and loved ones. You'll thank me later.

Run away!
For a 50k budget you can get a 997.2 C2S manual with approx. 60k miles, which is a much improved car.
There are plenty of choices out there for 997.1

Common wisdom here is as follows:
1. There is always a different car that fits your needs AND does not have over revs. Keep on searching.
2. The longer over revs lie in the past AND the engine runs fine now the less the probability of a failure due to the over revs.
3. Babied engines paradoxically may be more prone to have experienced bore scoring compared to regularly and safely hard driven engines.

Over revs in 4 and 5 were over 1400 hours ago so you can dismiss them now.
Over revs in 3 were almost over 200 hours ago so not that bad either.
Conclusions: in summary over revs are not that bad but not that good either. There are plenty of 997s out there. Keep looking. Anyway, my advice is to get a 997.2
Hartech UK said that X51 was even more risky for engine failure.

I wonder if there are any insurance companies that will total out a 997 if you overrev it since at that point it's really only worth its weight in scrap metal and salvaged parts.

As cool flash noted the range 4 and 5 overrevs occurred just 24 hours into the car's engine run time. Probably the new owner scaring himself you know what-less grabbing a lower gear when upshifting.
The other overrevs occurred quite a few hours ago.
If the car pushes all your buttons and passes a through road test and PPI and you can live with the overrev report buy the car. (I have no input regarding the car's price so you are on your own in that regard.)
Or don't buy the car.
The first rule of used car shopping is there is always another car.

thanks
Thanks for the input and quick responses. I agree that this price is too high and as of this weekend and reading the Rennlist forums 997.2 are opening my eyes. Interesting that I can find 997.2 (non-S) priced close to a 997.1 S. I guess I will be driving some .2's and see how I like them. Again - this forum has been very helpful, informative, and thanks again everyone.
