Hi,

In the midst of purchasing a 997 S with stock exhaust? What is the best bang for the buck? Looking to get PSE quality sound, I have $1500 to spend.

I have heard something about the "Gundo Hack" but can't seem to find a thread that explains exactly what it is, or directions for my local exhaust shop to follow.

anything else I should upgrade at that time? As I said, I have up to $1500 to do it right, don't want to cheap out, nor do I want to make several trips to the exhaust shop over time upgrading this and that. Time is always at a premium....

Open to used exhaust solutions as well. Headers? This is a street car, just looking for that rich flat-6 sound.

Fister sport mufflers are affordable and they sound great.

 

Long and short of it a "Gundo Hack" is a process of welding a small section of exhaust pipe between the incoming and exiting exhaust gas on the side mufflers essential creating side muffler bypasses. A "Gundo Hack" in addition to a center muffler by pass tube is a great bang for the buck and well with in your budget. For more information search "Gundo Hack". There are quite a few posts many with pictures. You might want to try a center muffler bypass first. Used ones come up from time to time and are pretty easy to install yourself. Cheers

 

.1 or .2 car? Big difference in options depending on which.

 

I have a template for the Gundo Hack 2" I did on my .2 that I can send you ...... I think someone used on their .1 and it fit fine. If you have a .2 the center muffler delete does very little imo for the $ you spend. It does deal with the muffler hanger bolts that can be a pita when you remove the mufflers

 

Just done this on my 997.2S and went with Sharkwerks X Pipe to replace rear muffler and then Fister side cans....he will send you the cans and then you send yours back or you can send yours and he will do the hack. I know some people have used local exhaust companies to weld in the hack but if they haven't done one before they could easily screw up your cans...much better to have Darin do them....super nice guy...all done for less than $1500. I did the install myself and although you can do it without removing the rear bumper it's much easier if you do and only takes about 20 minutes. Feel free to contact me if you need help.

I think once you get you muffler exhaust mod done then you are going to want to be doing the Cold Air Intake CAI mod......since this is a much harder hack you will want to get this or the one for the 997.1 depending on model

So with the Gundo hack =\- the x pipe delete and the CAI mods you will get the best sound and performance increase without throwing any CEL. All for around 1500 or less depending on your hack cost

997.2's have an additional center muffler that the 997.1's do not have. Plus the cat/header combination is one piece on 997.2's versus two pieces on the 997.1. This makes it cheaper to change out just the cats or headers on the .1 compared to the .2.

As others have said, Gundo/Fister and if it's a 997.2 then the center muffler delete as well. All in you would be well below your budget, maybe with enough left over to consider used 200 cell high flow cats.

i have a fabspeed exhaust on my car, not bad. i would say don't forget to check the classifieds here, you can stretch the 1500 quite a bit further and *almost* get a full i/h/e combo.

 

What year is your 997? Depending on whether you have a .1 or .2 car the factory exhaust systems are much different

 

The choice is easy. The only exhaust worth getting is the AfterHours Automotive "sport mufflers":

The cost is reasonable at ~$1200, and they give a weight reduction similar to installing a full titanium exhaust system.

Any other muffler system on the market, barring a full titanium system for $6000 doesn't improve performance since there is little to no weight reduction, and any HP/TQ claims are pure malarkey.
