Car Just Experienced IMS Failure
I will try to keep this brief. I am basically just looking for any ideas as to what to do next. I am the original owner of a 2005 997. I believe it was a Spring/early summer build. I actually used to post and lurk here all the time years ago when I had more time (pre-kids). Despite people hounding me for years to get a more practical car, I kept the 997 and have absolutely loved it. It is/was a total dream car for me and I knew that I couldn't really justify buying another now that I have two little kids. The car has been a daily driver and has about 66,000 miles on it. It has never been tracked or raced and was meticulously maintained.
On Tuesday night I was driving home, had been on the road about 5 minutes, and was at a stop light in Downtown LA. The car made a God awful noise and I immediately turned it off. It would not restart. I had it towed and the mechanic called me yesterday to say they believe it is intermediate shaft failure. They can get the engine to turn over (said sounds like rocks in a dryer) but oil is full of metal. They have not cracked the engine open as they estimate doing so will cost $2500 in labor costs and will just lead to them telling me it's shot.
For those of you that have experienced this, any advice? I am planning to have the car towed back to my house. I have a spot where I can keep it while I sort this out. Keeping the car is not going to be an option. I either need to get Porsche to make this right (long shot I figure), buy a used engine and then sell it, or sell the car as is. Thanks in advance for any advice. Heart sick about this. Thank you.

I don't want anyone to think I'm some sort of troll as this is my first post (I couldn't find old log in info--think tied to an old email). Here's a pic of my car from last year.

Sell it as a roller or get a used engine, a later date one with the larger bearing. Since you bought it new, see if PNA will goodwill you a new engine or one at reduced cost. Never hurts to ask.

Bummer..... your emotions are telling you to throw it away... I get that... but when you calm down, you may still want to keep it as it will be tough to replace it for equal cost of repair... maybe....
Plenty of threads on this including typical costs of alternatives. Good luck.
BTW, I had two engines blow......

What a shame - sorry to hear. Too bad shop tried to start before doing any diagnosis. Checking oil, filter and oil pan might have provided some useful info up front and prevented further damage if the engine is salvageable.

sell as a roller, used engine or jake raby motor......depends on many things....budget,condition of car ,attachment to car .Even if i put a used engine in it i would still sell it. if money was no issue i would put a raby monster motor in it

If it happened to me and I could afford it, I would buy a used engine and enjoy the car. Guy selling one in Socal here:

Date code should be on the black sticker on the drivers door. Can you share that?

Sorry to hear about your loss, but it appears you had many happy and uneventful years. When your head stops spinning, let up know what you eventually decide to do.
