Your car may belong to a class of VINs PAG agreed to offer some compensation or whatever the class judgement entails.

My heart sank reading your thread, Sorry to hear mate!
I lose a lot of sleep worrying about my oil consumption and the dreaded IMS failure.

To give you some data....

When my 2000 Boxster S's engine blew (2nd time), the chassis had 197K miles. on it.... and was still in great shape. Really great shape. My point here is that Porsche builds great stuff until they don't. The engine was not good but everything else they built was more than good.

So...... given you know the car, you may seriously consider putting a Raby or other engine in the car (about $25K from Raby + 6 month wait). If this costs you 25K or so...... even if you can buy "your" car used out there for the same, you still will have the bummer engine. A Raby or other rebuilt engine can, assuming a knowledgeable builder, put in an engine that will last to 200K miles and beyond.

For me with that 197K miles chassis, after talking to Raby, I found a 997.2 C2S for $53K 26K miles so for an additional 25K, I got a newer car with the good engine. Granted I was out $53K, but I keep my cars a long long time..... so far so good for me. But I came within a hair of pulling the trigger on a Raby engine with about 50 more HP............ Anywho... sold the chassis as a roller for about $3.3K.

Peace

Unfortunately I believe there is a 10 year Statute of Limitations on receiving compensation from the class judgement (meaning only mid-year 2007 models and newer can still apply for compensation).

Sell it as is, and try to find someone who damaged/totaled their car at a HPDE event...

That drivers motor is probably fine...

For such a person, buying your car for $10k would be a cheap way to get back on the track...

Mathematically, doesn't matter what you do. Its still going to be painful, and you are under water. There were previous threads on here in regards to how the math works out...

Easiest, least emotionally painful answer: sell as is, hope to get 10k$, and go buy something else.

Sounds like with the young kids your better to dump it and get back in to something in the future. Getting a 997.2 still exposes you to the dreaded bore scoring potential.

I had scoring and went with a LN rebuild and am very happy with it. Yes it takes time and $$ but I plan to keep the car for a long time. It will run circles around a GTS!!

Maybe this isn't the right thread to be asking this but I'll give it a shot. What are the 911 models post 993 that are truly robust and don't have a ticking time bomb issue that can grenade the engine (even if low probability).

Here are the ones I know about:
- 996 turbo
- 997.1 turbo
- 996 GT3
- 997.1 and 997.2 GT3

Are the 991.1 engines proving robust? 991.2 seems too new to judge yet.

Dayum. Sorry for your engine.
Was thinking just yesterday that my '05 997.1 was prolly safe since it hasn't exploded by now. Maybe not.

'Bore scoring' can happen in any engine. The 997.2 9A1 engine longevity has been demonstrated. All flat engines require careful warm up periods, especially in cold climates.

Wow, this is scary stuff. since you are the original owner, I would also start with dealer. even though 12 years old, there should be some brand protection on their part.
