Default Drilling SMALL holes in air box for SOUND?

Hey guys,
I have ordered the resonator cap for my airbox using one of these:

http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod76...C2-C4-2004-07/

Should hopefully make it sound even better!

Question is, should I drill the bottom of the airbox with 1/4 " holes!?

I know if I do this that it is going to suck in the warmer air of the engine bay and not from the scoop. Has anyone got any experience with this on a 997 as it seems to be a popular way to go with other cars to get a real sound boost?

Pics please!

Our airboxes alread have those holes. On my 2009, 997.2, if you pull out the air filters, you will see some opaque, thin panels covering big square holes. I believe this is for sound.... and won't allow air to pass.

BTW, you will be pulling heated air into the system if you just drill holes.

When I purchased my car, the sound was so dead, I would press my lips together and blow...... then I would add vocalizations.... I got real good at it except I couldn;t keep it going for long... too much spit on the windshield. So I purchased and installed a Sharkwerks X pipe.... much better now

Peace

Only drill the holes with a Porsche approved drill bit, set to a specific RPM.

I would do it for the weight savings alone. This plus added sound, no brainer.

Yes, we used to do that for 944s, and it used to be called the "Cup airbox modification". I don't recall if this was actually used on the 944 Cup cars or not. The holes I drilled weren't quite as big as the ones in that thread, but were probably at least 1" in diameter IIRC. Sure made the car sound nice, with a growl under heavy throttle. I don't recall any noticeable drop in the butt dyno, but I did have to clean the filter frequently because of the decaying underhood insulation.

The X-51boxes come up every once and a while...but IIRC you'll have to modify the rear deck lid to accommodate the additional snorkel. Your stock box works great.

Its quiet common for 993 guys to do this and the outline of the holes is actually on the airbox as they make a "performance" airbox where the holes are already drilled

To my mind, whats the diff between this and adding a K&N hot air intake? The K&N just sucks in more hot air and costs a lot more than drilling a few holes!!

Had a late 1970's Oldsmobile 88. A tank, with blue brocade sofa seats in it and a hot 8track player with Clarion equalizer. We used to flip the round top of the airbox over (yeah, had the wingnut on it..). That was a cool mod. Did it make a performance or sound difference? Probably not, but we thought so.

So, go for it....

If you purchased a 993 with the "sound package", included was an airbox cover with drilled out holes. Also, included were some modded mufflers. Those who did not have that option would often drill out the holes in the airbox cover. Actually, the cover had the markings for the holes!
