Talking Drilling SMALL holes in air box for SOUND?

Hey guys,

I have gotten a few guys that said that if you drill SMALL holes in the airbox, you will get a deeper "throaty" sound.

I really like the deeper sound and I guess if you drill the holes small, the amount of hot air that gets into the box is minimal.

My question is: What size is small? How many? and where do I drill the holes - in the top or all around the box?

Thanks as usual

It will probably sound alot like it does when driving without the top of the box on, just the open filter. Which I think sounds better.

i think open box would be worse since you are sucking way more hot air in and you have no fresh air pipe leading to the filter. Drilling holes will give you the throatiness depending on how many you drill. 1/4" or 3/16" seem about right. Do about 25-30 of them.

When you are driving at 60 miles an hour down the road the ambient temp around the intake box should not be much different from the outside air. The air temp difference is nominal.

I have a cone filter and it's like that. At lights the temp. goes up some because it gets hotter under the hood. I was looking into wrapping the headers to help that but it's not bad.

Pearl, you can try header wrap. I saw an aftermarket heat shield somewhere for sale, i think it was at 9X Auto or somethin. Anyways, it covered virtually that whole area. I think thats your best bet on reducing the heat in that engine compartment as well as header wrap. BTW, have you thought about going back to a stock airbox? When I tried a cone filter, I lost a large amount of torque and gained very little HP on the dyno.

Here's a picture of what I did.
Very throaty sound. I loved it.

i think those holes may be a little too large and you may lose a little bit of power on take off. I think the best thing to do is experiment with what you think will work best.

I drilled these holes, replaced the paper filter with a K&N and installed FR Wilk's chip at the same time. There was a noticeable difference in low-end and mid-range power. I live in Norway where summer temperatures seldom exceed 85 degrees. The only drawback was that the filter would get dirty faster, requiering more frequent cleaning.

i think the cooler temperatures give you the advantage and help work with your setup. Here in Cali, our poor cars would suffer from such large holes, not to mention the huge chunks of decaying insulation

At least your exhaust is on the opposite side of the engine. The air should be okay, just drill the holes on the front and outside (away from the engine) and hot air won't matter that much. I'd go with about 3 1.5" holes.

header wrap or heat shield would help also reduce those temperatures for you too! It may even keep your overall engine temperature cooler thereby giving you a ****-eating grin on your face like this..

That's Awesome! Someone finally not only made a cupholder for the 944, but it can hold the whole six pack of beer while you work.

I used to flip over the air cleaner on my 1968 Chevy Impala to get the same sound. 8 cylinders, 327 cubic inches, 250 hp, 4 barrel carb. I wish I had that car back!
