Default Thinking of upgrading my 997.1 to a 997.2 GTS, Need opinions

Hi guys, I have a 07 997 Cab W Tip. The car is in great shape w 78,000 on her.
Well optioned and all maintenance done. Including trans service. New tires (300miles on them).
Bose, Nav, duel power seats. I also have a ASAP extended warranty w warranty till 18th Dec 2018 or to 114000 miles. Silver in color and black interior.
I have been trying to figure a price to sell her. I see from $30,000 to $45,000 for a like car.

You guys always have good insight. Any ideas an a fair (to both parties) selling price?

BTW, I am considering just trading it in, (I don't like to sell items personally).

Thanks for the time,

B

Take it to Carmax. A Porsche dealer is going to really lowball you on a trade, with a dubious claim that 997 are not selling. The 997.1 and 997.2 move pretty fast at the dealers these days.

Having just traded a 997 for a 991, I can tell you that a Porsche dealership will lowball you. That being said, most of them will negotiate. I went back and forth several times with mine before we reached a deal. I didn't get as much as I would have by selling the car, but I didn't have the hassle of selling it. Everything was done in one simple transaction.

Good luck with your 991 search! You'll love it.

go to nada prices, look at the lowest price. the dealer will offer lower than this. selling between owners will be in the lower end of the prices

+1

Go to Carmax first and get the offer from them. Then go to the Porsche dealer and ask them to give you their price. Once they offer you some ridiculously low amount, take out the Carmax offer and use it to negotiate. If they are unwilling to match the price then go back to Carmax and collect your check.

Awesome! Thanks for the help. I have found a very clean 991. I am having it checked out tomorrow. I would much rather trade mine in. I don't want anyone coming to my house.

Thanks again,

B

Also try vroom. You upload pics, fill out some information and get a quote fast. I sold mine through them. They come and pick the car up. It wasn't a great deal, but it was $1500 more than Carmax. My dealer couldn't even touch the Carmax price.

I'm sure I could have made more private party but my time is valuable and I didn't want to deal with tire kickers, test drives and scammers.

Find a Hertz at an airport in a major city and rentca 991 for a weekend to see if you really want to do any of this. Not sure whete you're located, but at this time of year, only the warmer climate locations may have 991s for rent. If you're looking for true sports car feel and loved your 997, you may not love the 991 all that much.

For value, since the PDK has come out, tip cars are worth 3-5k less than a similar PDK or manual trans car, which isn't a like for like comparison since someone would have to go a couple years newer to compare a PDK can to yours. With your mileage and no pics, I say around $38k private party and $35k on a trade.

Hertz is a good suggestion. I would also try turo.com if you are going to give the rental a try. It might be cheaper than regular car rental places depending on where you live.

Mannheim shows 7 recent transactions on 2007 cabs. Average mileage is 77,000, average price is $27,379. This is the wholesale value of your car.

for some reason it's easy to buy these cars, but not so easy to sell them, if carmax is too low, you could try a local shop that takes commission cars, or try the classified on this site, people seems to aim very high on rennlist. shopping it to few small car lots might bring more cash, but it might take a few trips.

A quick snap shot on Cargurus showed an average asking price of $33,500 at various used car dealers. Inputs were: 2007, Tip, 67k-87k miles. Your geographic location (at the beach) and the warranty are things in your favor. That might translate into more $$$ or a quicker sale when comparing apples to apples.

Thanks for the information. I split the year, well, not quite. I am in NB, CA about 8 months. Lahaina, Maui the other 4 months.
This car if for here on the mainland. I appreciate the advice and the links to buyers. I would feel more comfortable just trading it in. However, I think the dealer will lowball me. I am going to go by Carmax tomorrow. Also will email Vroom. I am sure I will take a haircut selling this way. If reasonable, I will do it.
Thanks again,

B

How does CA tax trades? Many states will only tax on the difference between trade cost and purchase cost. $30k trade in a 6% tax state saves $1800 on trade purchase tax. On higher dollar trades, it makes more sense to trade to the dealer than try to sell to get a few more $.

"Sadly in California you pay sales tax on the purchase price of the new vehicle and the trade in has no effect whatsoever. There are only 8 states where this is true."

The above is from myfico.com.
