Why do I keep mangling the oil drain plug?

Over tightening plus not seating the hex bit or socket fully into the plug and/or not keeping the bit straight when tightening - and maybe even using a torx bit instead of a hex bit will lead to rounding very quickly.

Fumoto valves are terrific. I use them on my trucks. I *think* that it is possibly inappropriate for our cars as the valve may not allow full drainage of the pan.
The stock setup is good. I'm not one to fight city hall on these matters.

I recommend that you start the drain plug by hand:
1. Place the plug into into the drain hole, and
2. Without applying much pressure, rotate the plug as if you are unscrewing it,
3. Eventually, within 360 degrees of rotation, you will feel a slight click. That is the oil pan thread starting point meeting the drain plug starting point,
4. With out adjusting the position of the drain plug, now rotate the plug as if to tighten it.
5. This all but guarantees no cross thread.

Perfect. You can use this method on any metal on metal screw. I highly stress the hand tighten a few turns. If you cant do it by hand, you need to re-think whats going on.

bloody hell people, just snug the thing up with a ratchet. You guys see drain plugs littering the ground all over the sides of the road?

Fully agree! It amazes me how much can be written about tightening a stupid plug. Believe in certain cases it is best some people just drive the car, don't touch the spanner

Just to wrap up this "waste of time"--got new plugs in, and they fit the hex drive perfectly, i.e., the drive fully seats to the bottom. Lesson 1: Not all plugs are equal, even from a place such as Pelican. Lesson 2: People here will read pages of a thread, no matter how descriptive the title, and take the time to say it's a waste of time.

You said it, this is a silly thread. OP- if you can't do an oil change without having issues I suggest you enroll in a local college course on automotive maintenance or just hire a good indy to do it for you.

Shiiiiiiid....this place ain't nothing if it ain't about discussing all Porsche minutiae ad infinitum. I might've ran into an odd situation. But don't forget where your back button and scroll wheel is on your mouse. Do go on contributing to this silly thread if you like.
