Here's a down and dirty glance at my history with cars that brought me to the rarified air of the 997.2:
1981-1985: 1972 Karmen Ghia- loved it and drove it till the floor rusted out.
1985-1991: nothing-college and law school in NYC
1991-2003: 1990 Delphin Blue E30 325i BMW:loved every mile of its 174,000 mile journey
2003-2008: 2003 e46 330i BMW - meh and a 1998 e36 Montreal Blue Vert - meh
2008-2012: 2004 e46 Orient Blue ZHP 330i BMW - a touch above meh
2012-2015: 1999 e36 Imola Red M3 vert- great balance and driver feel. Sorry I sold it. At the same time a 2006 e46 Interlagos Blue ZCP M3- thought I found the one but faded quick
2015-present: The ONE - Black on Black 6 mt 2009 997.2 C2S. Game-Set -Match

Flying from CT out to Thousand Oaks California with the wife to pick up my 2009 997.2 C4S this Thursday. We will be driving it up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Francisco. I have arranged for horseless carriage to pick up the car in San Fran and deliver back to CT. We are totally Psyched!!

997 is the most modern 911 up to the 991, which was staggering jump in size and isolation, with attendant loss of nimbleness/tossability... and as such, the 997 bears more resemblance to older, more form-fitted 911's (though purveyors of SC's 964's 993's will still complain bitterly about the 997's bloat)

997.2 is a very nice refinement of .1 ... but PDK is just terrific, suspension is settled, and powerful engines that don't blow up are very very nice, even if the 9A1 sounds a little subdued in stock trim (this shortcoming is easily addressed)

similarly in the gt3 realm, 997.1 and 7.2 GT3's are imho a pinnacle of these cars... last, most refined cars bearing mezgers and no-cheating stick shifts (1gt3's are a tremendous achievement but the driving experience, while very very exciting, couldn't be more different)

based on this, i would agree that 997 is a wonderful and arguably the best 911 generation...

...but of course i am just a little biased

I definitely agree here. Not just the sound though, the suspension and drivetrain are a little soft for me as well.

Next year I will probably finish everything I have in mind and we will see how it feels, but until then the 997.2 c2s is close to perfect.

I never run a 911 before. After waiting for 55 years (yes, I started dreaming about it since I came to this world...) I bought mine 2012 Carrera Black Edition in Sao Paulo city in Brazil. about 1000 miles away from home. Then drove it to my home. It was about 2 years ago, and still smiling each time I take it from garage. Perfect car. As in my dream!

Here is my baby.

Just because you own a 997 I'm not sure that makes you biased. Everything you say makes sense in the context of PAG management seeking to maximize profits by expanding production of the 911. They began this later in the 997 cycle and made a full fledged commitment to it starting with the 991. How do you expand production/sales of a niche car? Make it more luxurious, a wholly committed GT car that you could sell to enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. The 991 is a fine car. It has the luxury many buyers are looking for and the performance as well. There's just, well, a disconnect between the 991 and everything that came before it. It's like, up to the 997, owning a 911 was like being a member of a club - you accepted it's shortcomings and quirks because it rewarded you by being a lot of fun to drive. The 991 is fast and capable and the fun is still there, it's just not the same - I don't mean this harshly but it seems to have less soul.

BTW, it's funny when you visit the 991 Board to read threads on the 991.2 v 991.1. It seems some of the same people who sang the praises of the 991.1 superiority over the 997 are claiming theirs is the last "true" Porsche 911. I wonder, if without knowing it, we have become the new 993 biased retro grouches.

I have a 997.1 C2 and am looking to upgrade to a 997.2 C2S, but it has proven to be very difficult to find one right now that has a manual transmission and is a coupe.

I have a feeling that the market has spoken on these two generations...

So this weekend I drove and drove and drove my black on black beauty. And you know what, on this Sunday night, while sipping a Stone Enjoy By 10/31/16 Tangerine IPA, I've come to the sad realization that I just did not drive it enough nor could I ever drive it enough. Just not enough time. It's really is actually sad.

A gross overstatement. A staggering jump in size and isolation?? Seriously?

Having owned a 993 my 997 was a staggering jump in size and isolation. A 997 vs 991 I think not. The 997 bears very little resemblance to 993's or 964's. It bears a lot more resemblance to a 996

The 997 is a great car but this tired argument holds no water in ripping the 991 and proclaiming the 997, the last great blah blah blah
