Steel wool works great for me with polish. Nothing else will get that crap off as well. Mine were never really bright chrome anyways and the fine steel wool leaves a brushed aluminum look
I've had great results with California Custom Purple metal polish with steel wool on my base 997.1 C2 tips.
Previously they were (at best when clean) a satin stainless finish - now they shine.
I use the blue Scotch dishwashing pad and all purpose cleaner form Adam's Polishes but I'm sure any brand cleaner would work. It doesn't get all the carbon/soot off but about 80%.
I use Sharkhide polish with a Mother's foam cone on my pneumatic drill for all my stainless polishing. I also use the Sharkhide metal protector on raw metal pieces to keep them looking like new, but not on hot exhaust parts. Look what it did to these used secondary cat bypass pipes for my Cayenne in about 20 minutes.
Though the cone is an elbow grease saver, I think the brand of polish is at least as important. I've tried autosol, Mother's, and a few others and none yield as good or as fast a result as this Sharkhide brand.
